Despite the New England cold warning of a blizzard, 15,000 Bostonians gave Mumford & Sons quite a warm welcome last Tuesday night. The English folk rock band’s performance at the TD Garden – tickets for which had sold out in only six minutes – kicked off their seven-show US tour. The charming foursome expertly and energetically worked through their hits, showing their skill on banjo, mandolin, accordion, violin, upright bass, piano, and more; front man Marcus Mumford’s vocals captivated in their own right. The group played a slew of tracks from 2012’s Babel as well as from their career-launching full-length debut Sigh No More.
Just a few years ago, Mumford & Sons played the House of Blues in Boston – a venue of roughly 500 capacity. Their unique style and stage presence now lends them an audience of tens of thousands. They will continue this headlining sweep of sold-out show through Europe into the summer. With performances like these almost certain that US fans will be swearing, “I will wait, I will wait for you,” until they come around once more.
Most needn’t wait too long, though – the band will be performing at this Sunday’s Grammy awards, and accepting their share of nominations (and possibly wins) as well.
