Last September Boston calling rocked the City Hall Plaza. Nearly 20,000 people showed up to see massive artists such as Vampire Weekend, Passion Pit, and Major Lazer. This Spring on May 23, 24, and 25 Boston Calling is holding another festival. The lineup has more of a laid back, indie/folk feel than the fall festival (no EDM here); nonetheless, the artists booked for this year are equally impressive.
Here Are the Top 10 Bands You Should be Sure to Catch at Boston Calling:
1. Jack Johnson

Probably the most famous artist at the festival, Jack Johnson will be headlining the first night, friday. Expect Jack to bring the love with his light-hearted, chilled out sound.
2. Death Cab for Cutie
This alternative band, led by singer Ben Gibbard, has a very clean and airy sound to their music. This band will surely draw a lot of lady fans, as Death Cab for Cutie is often pointed out as a “girly” artist. Catch this band headlining Saturday night.
3. Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros
This band is very unique – Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros is a musical collective of 12 people. “Edward Sharpe” is actually a fictional stage presence that is suposed to be a messianic figure. This will be a very cool artist to hear Friday night before Jack Johnson comes on stage.
4. Brand New

Brand New brings a much more aggressive sound than most of the other artists at Boston Calling. Make sure to check these guys out for some energetic metal/rock and an energetic crowd.
5. Modest Mouse
I’m not the biggest fan of Modest Mouse (his voice is ridiculous), but this band will be headlining the final day and will be sure to hype up the crowd, especially since they come on right after Brand New.
6. The Head and the Heart
I think these guys have a great sound – The Head and the Heart also seems like a relaxing artist to see live. Find this group at the Saturday show before the “secret band” and Death Cab.
7. “Secret Band”
There’s one unannounced artist in the Boston Calling lineup. There is no doubt this band will be a big one – they’re set to go on right before Death Cab for Cutie.
8. Bastille
Bastille has had a big year, what with releasing the single “Pompeii” and its first studio album Bad Blood. Though the band will likely just play tracks off of the first album, according to an interview with Billboard, Bastille is already working on a sophomore album. Perhaps we’ll be lucky and get to hear some new material.

9. Tegan and Sara
This Canadian indie-rock duo has been active longer than most of these bands, but twins Tegan and Sara Quinn are certainly still relevant to the indie scene. Currently, the sisters are up for four Juno awards for their most recent album Heartthrob and if you haven’t ever listened to these ladies, be sure to see them at Boston Calling.
10. Magic Man
Just a few weeks ago, Blast’s Amina Ly reviewed Boston’s Magic Man. She said it well: “Simply put, Magic Man is a band to be seen.” With its energetic sound and upbeat vocals, Magic Man is sure to bring summer to Boston a little early.
