Winner will work with "What Not to Wear" hairstylist Nick Arrojo

While attending Empire Beauty School in Boston, Sasha Brown, a 30-year-old hairdresser from Watertown, spent nearly every evening after class Googling Nick Arrojo’s online hair tutorials for styling tips. Now, as a top three finalist in Arrojo’s Masters of Beauty competition, Brown can potentially put down the laptop and learn from Arrojo, the world-renowned celebrity hairstylist from “What Not to Wear,” firsthand.

“It’s a dream,” says Brown. “I always thought he was brilliant hair-wise and now I have a chance to work with him.”

The Masters of Beauty competition was open for all 150,000 students from 105 different Empire Beauty Schools in 19 states. The winner of the competition will win a 24-month apprenticeship with Arrojo at his New York City salon, Arrojo Studio, $10,000 for moving expenses, free classes taught by Arrojo and tickets to the New York International Beauty Show in April. The top two runners-up will also get tickets to the show.

“The goal is for the winner to become a really good stylist,” says Arrojo. “We’ll train them to the best of our ability.”

Brown says that winning this competition would be the best opportunity for her to grow as a hairstylist and to jumpstart her career, but she didn’t always think this window of opportunity would be possible for her.

Before the competition’s first-round deadline, her husband, Phillip Brown, had secretly entered her in the contest by submitting a picture of one of her haircuts. When Brown discovered she had made it to the second round of the competition, she was in shock.

“He mentioned the competition to me and I said, ‘No way would I have a chance with that.’ and he said, ‘Of course you will, you’re brilliant,’” says Brown, adding that her husband is her biggest fan.

The two then worked as a team to further her into the competition. As a professional videographer, her husband put together a video of Brown transforming her client, Leslie Pederson’s, look from a light brown do to a red asymmetrical bob. She was then selected to be a top 10 finalist.

“She wants to work for Nick Arrojo, she wants to go to New York City, she wants to learn as much as she can,” says Pederson, of Haverhill, who has been Brown’s client for eight years. “She listens and she knows how to cut hair. She deserves it.”

Arrojo says that the look Brown submitted stood out because her cut was up to par with his taste level. “She definitely had elements that I would consider the Arrojo style, which is contemporary and wearable,” he says. “We kind of have a more fashion-forward feel, and her cut kind of fit the brand.”

Although Brown had just started beauty school at Empire two years ago, her hairstyling practices began long before she was enrolled. While growing up in her hometown of Brighton, England, Brown would visit her mother, Lynn Rome, while she worked as a hairdresser at the Deborah Jane Salon. At the age of 5, Brown had started her beauty school education. She would observe her mother wash, cut, color and style client after client’s hair, and often helped braid some of the customers’ locks.

“I loved watching my mom do everything,” says Brown, adding that she continued to shadow her mother after they moved to a new salon in Palm Springs, Calif. when she was 13. “I loved watching her do perms, cuts, color, everything.”

Like mother like daughter, Brown dreamed of becoming a hairstylist and practiced her natural talent on My Little Pony toys, Barbie dolls and her family’s heads whenever she could run her fingers through their hair.

“I remember walking in the living room and my grandpa was on his chair and he had mini ponytails,” says Brown’s brother, Marc Rome, an attorney in Oklahoma City. “She’d use multicolored elastic bands to put his entire hair in pony tails.”

Brown and her brother grew up as polar opposites; Rome was a bookworm and Brown was a social butterfly. Where Rome was often spending hours studying for exams and quizzes, Brown spent her time singing, dancing and acting. Although she often felt the pressure to be “smart” like her brother, Rome never thought his little sister didn’t have brains.

“She was really intelligent, but she used her intelligence in different ways,” says Rome, who remembers Brown braiding her friends’ hair all the time growing up. “It’s more of a creative intelligence.”

After high school, Rome took the college route, attending Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., but Brown knew that school wasn’t for her.

“I was always interested in the creative half of things, which didn’t really require the schooling in college but required schooling,” says Brown.

Going to college was something her mother wanted both of her children to experience, so she initially did not support Brown’s decision to pursue hairstyling.

“Growing up, she wanted to be a hair dresser and I wanted her to have an education,” says Brown’s mother, Lynn Rome, who has been a hairdresser for nearly 50 years. “I just desperately wanted her to go to school.”

As a kid, Brown remembers her mother soaking her swollen feet in hot water and complaining about sore limbs, shoulder pains and pulled muscles from constantly styling hair. The hair profession was physically demanding, and that was another reason why her mother didn’t support Brown’s career path.

“She kept telling me it’s really hard on the body and it’s a lot of hard work, and I was dumb and I listened to her,” says Brown.

Following her mother’s wishes, Brown went into various jobs trying to discover her passion. She worked as a flight attendant immediately after high school, was a nanny for seven years, was a waitress at multiple restaurants and was a dental assistant for five years.

“It was good pay and my mom kind of coaxed me into the go-for-the-money kind of thing, but I was miserable doing that,” says Brown. “I worked hard at it but it didn’t fulfill me.”

It wasn’t until she was 28 years old when she realized doing hair was her true calling. Two years ago, her husband had come home with a botched haircut that “looked like someone had their eyes shut when they were cutting his hair,” says Brown. She grabbed a pair of scissors and intuitively knew how to recover her husband’s awful new ‘do, and when she was done, Brown says her husband looked at her and said, “This is ridiculous. It’s time for you to do hair.”

“I like her cuts a lot better than other people I’ve been to, to be honest,” says Phillip Brown, her husband, who was in the Army, stationed in North Carolina at the time. “I’m really picky when it comes to who cuts my hair, and she does such a good job.”

When she moved back to Boston after living in the South with her husband for three years, Brown went straight to beauty school, where she’d have three-to-six walk-in clients a day coming in and out of the Empire salon. As a hands-on learner, Brown perfected her techniques through her experience at the school.

Emily Shuman, a career planning specialist at Empire Beauty School in Boston, says Brown was a standout student. She says that compared to other students, Brown had a large clientele and it was clear she produced quality work and that her clients were drawn to her perky, bubbly persona, which made them often come back asking if they could make an appointment with “the British girl.”

“Every single client left here with a giant smile on their face ready to book their next visit with her,” says Shuman. “She’s a very charming student here and made the clients feel very at ease. They didn’t feel like they were getting their hair done at a beauty school, she made it feel like the real deal.”

One loyal walk-in client of Brown’s at Empire was Jenna McGowan, who says that she enjoys going to Brown to get her hair done because she’s talkative, funny and a great listener.

“She’s very easy to talk to, which is great,” says McGowan, who started going to Brown a year ago. “That’s what people are looking for in a hairdresser.”

Brown’s brother agrees. “I think it’s really quite appropriate she’s a hair dresser because there’s more to being a hairdresser than just the design component,” says Rome. “There’s an entertainment component to hairdressing and she’s very good at being a hairdresser.”

In addition to studying Arrojo’s online videos and attending Empire part-time, Brown would seek inspiration by going into various hair salons throughout Boston and passively observing other stylists at work. She constantly envisioned hairdos that would look good on people everywhere she went.

“She’s always looking out for what she can do to people’s hair,” says McGowan. “She dreams about what she would do to their hair if they would let her.”

Her easygoing and welcoming personality and her commitment to improving her craft is exactly what Arrojo says he is looking for in a winner. “The salon is very friendly and I think very cool,” he says. “I’m looking for someone who’s very nice and someone who’s very committed.”

And committed, she is: Brown won first place in a competition at Empire put on by Arthur Miller, an owner of a salon on Newbury Street; volunteered to do children’s hair while teaching them about hygiene at the school; and always participated in school events, even dressing up as Betty Boop for an Empire look-a-like contest.

Currently, she is working at the Waban Salon in Newton, where both she and her more-than-proud mother work side-by-side. The competition winner will be selected on May 21, and Brown says if she wins, this will help her provide for her, her husband and their two children, Bailey, 6, and Brighton, 3, and it would create more opportunities for her in what she is most passionate about–the hair business.

“Finally my passion got the best of me and I did what I knew I should’ve done 10 years ago,” says Brown. “I love it and it’s not hard work to me at all. It’s loads of fun.”

Products are hand-picked by celebrity makeup artist Damone Roberts

The newest buzz in beauty is The Look Bag, a customized sample kit sent right to your door–for just $10 a month! Founded by E! Entertainment creator Alan Mruvka, TheLookBag.com, which debuted in January, features product reviews, celebrity picks and videos. Best of all? The five deluxe samples delivered to members each month are hand-picked for them by celebrity makeup artist and “Eyebrow King” Damone Roberts. Just fill out a beauty profile, and the products, from such brands as Alexander McQueen, Gucci and Tom Ford, are matched to you. If you love what you get (and we’re sure you will!) you can buy full-sized versions of the products on the website at a 20 percent discount!

Roberts has earned his “King” status by working with the likes of Madonna, Rihanna, and Britney Spears, and has appeared on numerous TV shows, including “Oprah,” “The View,” “Good Morning America” and TLC’s “10 Years Younger.” He has salons in New York City and Beverly Hills, and his own line of products. Blast spoke with Roberts about his favorite looks for spring, how to get those perfect brows at home and what makes The Look Bag unique.

BLAST: How did you go from being an art student to becoming a celebrity makeup artist and “Eyebrow King?”

DAMONE ROBERTS: While I was an art student at Rutgers, I realized that painting a canvas and a face are very similar. I’ve always loved the world of beauty and glamour. I would do my mom’s makeup before she’d go out, and she would get compliments. Then I started doing her friends’ makeup, and it went from there.

BLAST: What is your favorite beauty trend right now?

DR: I’m into color for spring; I’m talking orange lips, pink lips, bright blush, blue eyeshadow, green eyeshadow. People forget that makeup is meant to be fun. People take it too seriously. You can wash it off at the end of the day!

BLAST: What is the number one beauty mistake women make?

DR: Over-tweezing their brows! Less is more. Eyebrows are the most important underestimated facial feature. Brows add lift, balance and structure to the face. If they’re over-tweezed, they don’t add lift, balance or structure. Having the perfect brow changes your life, and I mean that wholeheartedly.

BLAST: What’s the best way for women to do their brows at home?

DR: You’ve got to do one line of hair at a time. You’ve gotta work on one brow a bit, then work on the other, but step back and check while you’re tweezing. Don’t do one whole brow and then try to match the other one to it. Clear brow gel is the one thing every woman needs in her bag. It opens up the eye. If you have long eyebrow hairs, use the brow gel to brush brows up, and then use a pair of brow scissors and cut across the top. I really do believe that my brow gel is the best in the industry; it doesn’t flake.

BLAST: What’s your favorite part of being a makeup artist?

DR: I love helping people be the best versions of themselves, versions that maybe that haven’t seen before. I’m at artist at my core, and makeup is my outlet to create. What makes The Look Bag unique is that I’m picking out the products myself. I see what celebrities are using–I’ll ask Beyonce, Megan Fox–and then I introduce those products to people who might not have access to them.

New FDA study finds more lead in lipstick than previously found

(Media Credit/Lea Aharonovitch via Flickr)

Women have worn it for centuries to add a hint of color to their lips, but consumer and environmental groups are raising concern over the lead in lipstick. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CSC), which is composed of consumer and environmental groups, addressed the issue in a letter earlier this month to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The group wants lead levels in lipstick to decrease, as they argue that there is no “safe level” for the metal.

In 2007, the CSC tested 33 lipsticks, including shades from top brands in the U.S., and reported that “two-thirds of the 33 samples we tested contained detectable levels of lead; of those, half were above the recommended limit for lead in candy.” In response, the FDA conducted its own study, using 20 of the same brands and shades the CSC had tested, which included shades from Revlon, Cover Girl and Estee Lauder. Initial FDA findings found the average lead concentration in the lipstick samples to be 1.07 parts per million (ppm), while an expanded survey, the findings of which were released in December of 2011, revealed the average concentration to be 1.11 ppm of 400 samples tested.

“This new report found higher levels of lead in lipstick than previously reported, and adds to our concern about the health risks of lead-containing lipstick–a product used by millions of women of childbearing age who are unaware that they may be building up their blood lead levels each time they apply lipstick,” the CSC said in the letter.

The group adds, “The most-contaminated brand, Maybelline Color Sensation made by L’Oreal USA, had lead levels more than 275 times the level found in the least contaminated brands, and more than seven times higher than the average found in all the lipsticks. Clearly, some manufacturers could be doing more to protect women from unnecessary lead exposure.”

Though the FDA has not set limits for lead in cosmetics such as lipstick, it has set limits for lead in color additives to “no more than 20 parts per million,” according to its website. The FDA also asserts that the lead in lipstick is “ingested only in very small quantities.”

In the letter, though, the CSC argues that last month, an advisory committee to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention recommended that the CDC focus on “aggressive prevention efforts for lead exposure.” The letter continues, “Based on new information as well as new understanding of old data, the committee’s report asserted that there is no safe level of lead for children; that the low-dose effects of lead extend beyond the neurodevelopmental realm into cardiovascular, immunological, and endocrine effects; and that the health effects of lead exposure appear to be irreversible.”

The FDA asserts on its website, though, that consumers should not be alarmed, stating, “Although we do not believe that the lead content found in our recent lipstick analyses poses a safety concern, we are evaluating whether there may be a need to recommend an upper limit for lead in lipstick in order to further protect the health and welfare of consumers.”

According to the FDA’s 2010 expanded survey of 400 lipsticks, the following lipsticks had the most lead contamination:

1. Maybelline Color Sensational in Pink Petal, 7.19 ppm.

2. L’Oreal Colour Riche in Volcanic, 7 ppm.

3. NARS Semi-Matte in Red Lizard, 4.93 ppm.

4. Cover Girl Queen Collection Vibrant Hues Color in Ruby Remix, 4.92 ppm.

5. NARS Semi-Matte in Funny Face, 4.89 ppm.

According to the FDA’s 2010 expanded survey of 400 lipsticks, the following lipsticks had the least lead contamination:

400. Wet’n'Wild Mega Mixers Lipbalm, <0.026 ppm.

399. Clinique Almost in Black Honey, <0.026 ppm.

398. L’Oreal Colour Juice in Cherry On Top, <0.026 ppm.

397. Lori Anne Mood in Blue, 0.03 ppm.

396. M.A.C Satin in M.A.C Red, 0.03 ppm.

In some cases, ingredients have been implicated in respiratory, immune and endocrine problems, even cancer. Fortunately, there is now a wide range of greener, healthier hair care products available. (Thinkstock/iStock)

Many common hair care products, including shampoos, conditioners and hair sprays, can pose health hazards. Most of the shampoos for sale on supermarket and drugstore shelves use a chemical called sodium laureth sulfate (or one of its derivatives), a foamy de-greaser that can cause follicle, skin and eye irritation, and which has been linked to some cancers when combined with other common shampoo ingredients.

Meanwhile, mass-market conditioners typically rely on so-called quaternary compounds to produce thicker, silkier and tangle-free hair, but these chemicals can also irritate the skin and eyes and likewise have been linked to cancer. As for hair spray and other styling products, most work by coating the hair with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), a plastic polymer that has been dissolved in solvents to keep it flexible. Environment Canada, Canada’s counterpart to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, classifies PVP as a medium health priority, although phthalates, triethanolamine, parabens and other hair spray ingredients may be more harmful, having been linked to respiratory, immune and endocrine problems as well as cancer.

Luckily for those who spend a lot of time and money getting their hair to look, smell and feel just right, a wide range of greener, healthier hair care products has emerged in recent years. Aveda has been a pioneer in the industry ever since Horst Rechelbacher launched the company in 1978 after visiting India and witnessing the healing powers of Hindu medicine and aroma. Today the company offers seven hair product lines tailored to different hair types, with the majority of the ingredients derived from plants, non-petroleum minerals or other natural sources. Furthermore, upwards of 89 percent of the essential oils and raw herbal ingredients Aveda uses in its hair cars products are sourced from certified organic producers.

There are hundreds of other companies, too, that sell natural hair products. A great place to look is at the GoodGuide, a website that rates 145,000 foods, toys, personal care and household products according to health, environmental and social responsibility standards. Top-rated shampoos listed there include Burt’s Bees Rosemary Mint Shampoo Bar, Aura Cacia Kids Shampoo and Aubrey Organics Men’s Stock Ginseng Biotin Shampoo. GoodGuide’s top performing conditioners include Dr. Bronner’s Hair Conditioning Rinse, Burt’s Bees Herbal Blemish Stick with Tea Tree Leaf Oil, KMS Haircare Liquid Assets and Nurture My Body Conditioner. As for styling, GoodGuide likes any of the varieties of Dr. Bronner’s Hair Conditioner and Style Cream as well as L’Oreal’s Elnett Extra Strong Hold.

Another source for credible hair care products recommendations is the Guide to Less Toxic Products, a free online resource produced by the Environmental Health Association of Nova Scotia. The guide lists 25 shampoos, 22 conditioners and 18 hair styling products that meet its stringent ingredient standards. Also check out the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep cosmetics database, which provides detailed ingredient information and safety assessments for 70,000 personal care products, including hundreds of shampoos, conditioners and hair styling formulations.

And it looks good, too

By Kasey Miller at Emmanuel College

Photo Cred: www.laurenshope.com

The main reason people do not wear medical IDs is because they are ugly and bring attention to their medical conditions. Another reason is because people do not know what medical conditions are considered important enough to merit wearing a medical ID. The simple solution would be to ask your doctor. If your doctor thinks you should wear a medical ID odds are you should wear one.

Lauren’s Hope medical IDs are negating the stigma of people wearing medical IDs. They are fashionable and, unless the person wearing the ID wants or needs to bring attention to their medical condition, no one knows that they are wearing one.

The front of the pendant looks like a carnation with a lot of colorful layers. In the center of the flower is a red medical alert symbol but unless you are strictly looking for it, you do not see it. If you are trying to look for it, you will see it.

“It’s so important to wear a medical ID and when Laurens Hope makes them so cute I don’t mind wearing mine! People need options when they have diabetes. We have minimal options in treatment, but in fashion they are limitless.” Says Allison Crace, a type one Diabetic.

On Lauren’s Hope webpage, you can choose from a variety of styles of medical IDs. If you prefer to wear something subtle, like a watch, they have that option. If you want something flashy that shows up when you wear it, they also have jewelry that fits that description. Whatever style you are, and if you have any known chronic illnesses, Lauren’s Hope has the type of medical ID you are looking for.

People with known chronic illnesses crave control – and Lauren’s Hope gives some control back to these people.

A Lauren’s Hope medical ID necklace looks like a normal necklace. This brings up the question: How does medical staff know if a person is wearing a medical ID? The answer is that emergency medical staff is trained to check for the little red medical alert symbol on the arms, neck or feet of any person seen by emergency medical staff.

The price of a Lauren’s Hope medical ID would be somewhere in the sixty dollar range. The price of not wearing a medical ID, on the other hand, is far more costly.

Aveda hairstylists give step-by-step instructions on how to achieve these runway looks

Beautiful hair was everywhere at this year’s New York Fashion Week, and thanks to some of the industry’s top hairstylists, you can create these chic, straight-from-the-runway looks yourself at home. Read on for step-by-step instructions, and you’ll be looking runway-ready in no time!

A modern, youthful twist

Designer: Preen
Hairstylist: Paul Hanlon, lead stylist for Aveda

To complement Preen’s modern yet feminine look, Hanlon says he “wanted the hair to impart the same lightness, innocence and purity. We created a sleek silhouette to mirror the clean lines of the clothes.” The result? Hair that is “pure and neat; it almost has a forties feel,” he adds.

How to do it

1. Prep hair by spritzing throughout with Aveda Volumizing Tonic, then blow dry with a round brush. Work hair away from the face and neck to keep the hairline clean. If hair is dry or damaged, begin by prepping with Aveda Brilliant Damage Control, and follow with Aveda Volumizing Tonic.

2. Once dry, gently brush hair away from the face and let hair part naturally on the left side. Smooth hair with a fine-toothed comb and a light mist of Aveda Air Control Hair Spray.

3. On the right side of the head at the top of the ear, begin to twist hair toward the back of the head, staying just on top of the parietal ridge. Use a tail comb to neatly bring hair up into the roll, and secure the roll with “U” pins. Avoid twisting too tightly at this point.

4. Continue twisting toward the back of the head following the natural hairline. Twist all the way to the nape, secure hairwith a clip.

5. Repeat twist on the left side, starting slightly lower, one to two inches above the top of the ear, sloping downward at the back of the head to create a “U” shape when twists meet at the nape.

6. Neatly brush hair upward from the hairline to create a seamless connection between the two twists. This gives the appearance of a single, smooth, twisted roll that snugly wraps around the head.

7. Use Aveda Air Control Hair Spray and the end of a tail comb to smooth all wisps and flyaways while replacing “U” pins with bobby pins, snugly tucked and hidden.

8. Finish with Aveda Brilliant Spray-On Shine.

Long, loose, effortless waves

Designer: Christian Siriano
Hairstylist: Antoinette Beenders, lead stylist for Aveda

“The hair for Christian Siriano this season is playful and looks effortless,” says Beenders. “We’ve updated the loose, beachy waves of the ’90s with a more groomed look that’s smart, young and approachable. I was inspired by Christian’s muse for this collection: a charming, smart girl who radiates happiness. The hair is super wearable and reflects her flirty, yet clever nature. It’s fun, fresh and modern—just like the collection.”

How to do it

1. Dampen hair at the root with Aveda Volumizing Tonic and blow dry with a large round brush to create natural volume. For added lift, use Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray as a setting lotion while blow-drying by lightly misting the hair.

2. Use a one-and-a-half-inch barrel curling iron to curl one-inch sections of hair away from the face until all hair is curled. Rake with fingers to loosen.

3. Flip hair upside down and gently brush curls through.

4. Flip hair back up. Create a deep side part and gently smooth out the top of hair using a comb, maintaining volume at the part.

5. Spray Aveda Brilliant Spray-On Shine onto a kabuki makeup brush and stroke the brush over hair from roots to ends to give a healthy shine. Keep style in place and protect against humidity with Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray.

Textured and touseled

Designer: Band of Outsiders
Hairstylist: Didier Malige, stylist for Aveda

Malige created two looks for the Band of Outsiders’ show (which was inspired by the dark 1975 Australian film “Picnic at Hanging Rock”), a romantic, “girly” look of textured waves, and a “boyish” look of a touseled chignon. “The hair for both looks at Band of Outsiders is textured, matte and has an easy look, almost undone,” says Malige. “It’s as if she’s done her hair herself, pulling it back into a loose chignon or letting it fall into natural waves.”

How to do it: The “girly” waves

1. Divide dry hair into two sections with a straight middle part.

2. Working with one section at a time, twist each section of hair away from the face while applying Aveda Brilliant Retexturizing Gel.

3. Continue twisting hair and working in the gel until hair is nearly saturated.

4. Holding the twisted section out with your fingertips, use a blowdryer to set hair. Continue blowdrying and twisting until hair is completely dry.

5. Pin the twist to the side of the head, creating a large spiral. Leave for several minutes to set.

6. Repeat on the other side of the head.

7. Once the spirals have set, remove pins so that the twists fall onto each shoulder. Rake hair with your fingers to create waves.

8. For added texture, scrunch Aveda Pure Hair Abundance Potion into waves.

9. Finish with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray.

How to do it: The “boyish” chignon

1. Mist Aveda Air Control Hair Spray throughout hair from roots to ends to texturize the hair and give pliable hold.

2. Gently brush hair through using a brush.

3. Using a wide-toothed comb, backcomb hair from mid-length to ends, leaving the roots untouched. This creates grip and hold on the hair, making it easier to pull back and secure.

4. Twist hair back and create a loose chignon at the occipital bone. Pin into place.

5. Gently backcomb the top layer of hair and the chignon in a feathering motion, creating additional wisps and a slightly “undone” look.

6. Loosen a few wisps of hair around the face for a natural, slightly mussed feeling.

7. Hold style in place with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray.

A wearable, pretty chignon

Designer: Sophie Théallet
Hairstylist: Didier Malige, stylist for Aveda

For Sophie Théallet’s collection, inspired by the 1969 film “La Piscine” (meaning “The swimming pool”), Malige wanted hair that expressed “an understated refinement, an instinctual sensuality.” Malige says that “the hair is that of a girl who has just gone swimming, as if she has offhandedly pulled her hair back in a chignon and just left it to dry. It reflects a nonchalant sensuality, her natural and understated sophistication.”

How to do it

1. Brush hair away from the face with fingers, while working Aveda Pure Abundance Potion throughout to texturize.

2. Pull hair back with hands, gathering at the back of the head as if to pull into a ponytail.

3. Twist hair and coil into a loose bun, fasten with bobby pins.

4. Pat a generous amount of Aveda Men Pure-Formance Grooming Clay and Aveda Control Paste onto the head, massaging and scrunching to create a matte, wet-and-dried texture.

5. Smooth sides very close to head and leave a little volume on top.

If rich makeup colors intimidate you, relax! Blast spoke with Geason, who shared her expert tips on how to recreate some of this fall and winter’s standout looks from the collection—step by step!

Blast: Which of the colors from the collection do you recommend for light, medium and dark skin tones?

Janell Geason: All the colors of Jewels of the Earth can be used on all skin tones; the key is application. Just as gemstones are classified as transparent, translucent and opaque, these same effects can be achieved with makeup, therefore making all colors wearable for all skin tones.

Blast: What about for each eye color?

JG: It depends on what you want to achieve. You can create an interesting contrast to your hair color or eye color. For example, if you have a vibrant red or violet toned hair color, choose rich emerald tones to create a pop; Jade works beautifully for this. Or use your eye color as a guide to create tonal dissonance. For example, green eyes with gold flecks look beautiful in amethyst tones, blue eyes shine with warm, rich copper tones, and brown eyes have it all depending on what flecks of color you want to bring out.

Blast: Since jewel tones are rich, how can they be “toned down” for an easy daytime look?

JG: For a more subtle look, use a pop of color on the top lash line above or in place of your eyeliner. Amethyst, Azurite or Jade are great options for this look. Use the colors as an accessory, which means doing your makeup like you normally do and add a touch of jewel tones to it.

Blast: Any tips on how to make a smokey eye using the collection’s colors instead of the classic black?

JG: Begin by smudging an eyeliner all around your eye. I prefer Aveda’s Black Orchid Eye Definer. Then choose your favorite jewel-toned shade–I love Amethyst, Jade or Azurite for this–and apply with a Medium Eye Color Brush. Apply from your lash line to slightly above the crease. Blend outer edges well. Then go back with a lighter shade –I love Sanidine for a touch of gold–and apply slightly above the first color and accent the inner corner of the lid for added glam. I suggest doing the top lid first to avoid the “panda eye.” Once you finish the top lid, you’ll easily be able to see how heavy you need to go on the bottom lash line. Finish the bottom lash line with the same jewel-toned shade you used on the top, and remember to blend well. Curl lashes and apply Aveda’s Black Forest Mosscara to top and bottom lashes. This smokey eye is my favorite for an evening out.

Blast: What is your favorite daytime look?

JG: For day, a strong red lip paired with a neutral eye creates a polished look. On the eyes, a sweep of Terraverte Eye Color from the lash line to slightly above the contour of the eye, with Sanidine diffused lightly at the inner corner of the eye, does the trick. Finish with Aveda’s Black Forest Mosscara on the lashes and Vanadinite Lip Color for a pretty pout.

So there you have it; now there’s no excuse for ho-hum makeup this fall and winter. Do to your face what a sparkling bauble does for your outfit and brighten it up with gorgeous jewels!

Rihanna's bright red 'do makes a statement. (Media Credit/J. Strauss, WireImage)

There’s a hot new look for the hottest season: red hair. Although just two percent of the population are said to be natural redheads, one look at the TV and the latest magazine covers proves that many more want to be!

Some celebrities, such as Rihanna and Paramore’s Haley Williams, are choosing very bright “look at me!” shades of red that add extra oomph to their larger-than-life rock star attitudes. More recently, we’ve also seen “Gossip Girl’s” Blake Lively and aptly-named Scarlett Johansson take on subtler red shades in preparation for upcoming roles. Natural blonde Drew Barrymore also recently went red.

Yahoo.com reports that many of the most recognizable fiery-haired celebrities are not natural redheads, citing Lucille Ball, “Mad Men’s” Christina Hendricks, “Sex and the City’s” Cynthia Nixon, and “Will & Grace’s” Debra Messing; they’ve all been faking it for years, and many of us couldn’t picture them in any other shade. Blast spoke with in-home beautician Arielle Ferguson from Salem, Mass., for tips on how the everyday woman can successfully pull off the trend.

Blake Lively looks sultry and smokin' hot with red hair. (Media Credit/Mazur, WireImage)

First, consider your skin tone. “If you have a golden tone, try a deep auburn red to make you hair really stand out,” says Ferguson. “An olive complexion works well with a darker shade like a burgundy. If you have a pale skin tone, stay away from bright reds, instead opting for a coppery shade.”

Different hair colors will absorb the red tint differently, so it’s best to ask your stylist how to get your desired look. For instance, naturally lighter hair may turn orange if handled aggressively, and naturally darker shades may first need to be chemically lightened to achieve the right look.

Ferguson advises, “Bring pictures of the color you want to help your stylist get a sense of what you’re looking for in terms of the brightness or intensity of the color.”

If you have to do it at home, start with a semi-permanent shade until you’re sure you’ve gotten it right; red is the hardest color to apply and hardest to remove, celebrity stylist Tracey Cunningham told Yahoo.com. You should also use a shampoo and conditioner formulated to preserve your color and prevent fading. Root touch-ups will likely need to be done every several weeks, but lighter shades may need the entire head recolored every couple of months, Cunningham adds.

Drew Barrymore's dark locks are sophisticated. (Media Credit/David Livingston, WireImage)

So what makeup goes with your new shade and what color clothes should you wear? ”Try earthy colors on your eyes,” says Ferguson. “Or, for a nighttime look, use red lipstick to make your mouth pop and swipe a brown or black liner on your eyes.”

Beauty and fashion advice website Greatest Look suggests avoiding purples or pinks in your wardrobe that can clash with your hair, but it’s a matter of personal preference. If you really love a clashing color, Greatest Look suggests accessorizing in that color or simply wearing it as far away from your face as possible. Green also offsets red in the color wheel, so search for a shade of green that works; the lighter your hair, the lighter the green in your clothing should be. Knowing your color “season” can also point you in the right direction.

But when it comes to red hair, the most important accessory is you! Work your confidence to show off your bold new look, because blondes don’t have all the fun anymore!

And the cosmetics industry has essentially been regulating itself for some three decades. But critics argue that self-regulation isn't appropriate for an industry trading in potentially carcinogenic products. (Media credit/Jupter Images via Thinkstock)

The Safe Cosmetics Act was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives in July 2010 by Democrats Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, Ed Markey of Massachusetts and Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin. But it never got past committee reviews and thus never came up for a vote.

The proposed bill aimed to ensure that all personal care products for sale in the U.S. would be free of harmful ingredients and that all ingredients would be fully disclosed. The bill would’ve given the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the authority to prohibit the use of certain ingredients, including carcinogens and reproductive and developmental toxins, to recall products that fail to meet safety standards, and to require product labels to name each ingredient.

The FDA has only limited say in what cosmetics manufacturers can and cannot put into their products. And the cosmetics industry has essentially been regulating itself for some three decades, and would like to keep it that way. In response to failed efforts in the 1970s to force the FDA to regulate cosmetics more like drugs—with required pre-market safety assessments—the industry decided to take matters into its own hands, creating the Cosmetics Industry Review Panel to judge the safety of various ingredients.

Critics argue that self-regulation isn’t appropriate for an industry trading in potentially carcinogenic products. “It’s a panel funded by the trade association,” Stacy Malkan of the non-profit Campaign for Safe Cosmetics told the Washington, DC-based Corporate Crime Reporter. “For 30 years that they have been in operation, they have only looked at about 13 percent of the chemicals in cosmetics. They do cursory reviews. They look mostly for short term health effects. It’s a panel of mostly dermatologists, not toxicologists. So, they don’t have the expertise to be looking at long-term health effects like cancer.”

Another non-profit, the Environmental Working Group (EWG), has identified upwards of 100 different products that passed Cosmetics Industry Review Panel safety assessments despite obvious violations of that body’s own guidelines. According to EWG’s research, 22 percent of all personal care products on store shelves today—including children’s products—may contain a cancer-causing ingredient (1,4-Dioxane), while some 60 percent of sunscreens contain oxybenzone, a potential hormone disruptor.

In response to the government not requiring cosmetics manufacturers to be more responsible, EWG launched the Skin Deep website, an easy-to-use, keyword-searchable database of cosmetics and their health risks and environmental footprints. The idea behind the website is to let users decide for themselves which cosmetics to purchase; EWG hopes that making this information freely available and easy-to-access will help drive demand for safer products.

Supporters of the Safe Cosmetics Act were hopeful that passage of their bill would usher in a new era of more rigorous mandatory screening of cosmetics here at home, and leadership in a global marketplace hungry for safer, greener products. Advocates for safe cosmetics hope that lawmakers will muster the resolve to reintroduce the bill, or another like it, in the current or some future session of Congress.

Who says beauty can't change the world?

Buying this lavender-scented candle is just one of the ways you can help

Next time you suds up, shave and relax in the tub, remember this: Taking just one bath uses, on average, over 40 gallons of water, while many people in the world have access to fewer than eight gallons of water a day. Nearly 900 million people around the world struggle to obtain clean water, and over 3.5 million people die each year from water-related diseases, according to Water.org. But despite the grim statistics, there is hope. This month, Aveda celebrates its 12th Earth Month Campaign in the effort to raise $4 million to bring clean water to those who need it. The best part? You can help!

Aveda, known for its high-end skincare, haircare and makeup products made with plant-based, organic ingredients, has raised over $18 million for environmental organizations since 1999.

“Environmentalism and social activism are Aveda’s heritage; they are part of our culture, they are in our DNA,” said Katie Galloway, Aveda’s Earth Fund manager. “We believe it is our responsibility to care for the world and communities where we do business.”

This year, all of the money raised by the Earth Month Campaign will go to the Global Greengrants Fund, which gives grants to grassroots organizations working to provide clean water to impoverished communities around the world.

“Water is a fundamental human right and a global issue,” said Galloway. “Whether pollution or scarcity, this is a problem in everyone’s back yard.” Galloway continues, “We all have a role to play in preserving biodiversity and protecting the health of the planet for future generations. It’s a question of sustainability; we cannot continue to ignore environmental degradation without understanding its detriment to all life forms —plants, animals and humans.”

How you can make a difference

Relax with aromatherapy. One hundred percent of the purchase price ($12) of Aveda’s soy Light The Way Earth Month Candles will be donated to the campaign. The limited-edition candle is scented with 100 percent certified organic lavender, lavandin and clary sage essential oils and is packaged with recycled materials.

Go for a walk. During the week of April 22, join the Walk for Water event at participating salons and spas. Raise awareness by walking 3.7 miles, the average distance women in developing countries must walk in order to collect water every day.

Get your hair done. Make an appointment at a participating salon or spa and a portion of the service fee will be donated to the campaign. If you use Foursquare or Facebook to check in at that location, Aveda will donate $1.

Go shopping. Shop at Aveda.com and donate $1 at check-out to support organizations working to improve water quality for disaster victims in Japan.

Sonya Metzler of Cambridge's Vim Fitness Spa and Salon shares her top 3 looks

Hilary Swank wore her hair in a romantic bun at the 2011 Academy Awards. (Media Credit/Granitz, WireImage)

We’ve got spring/summer 2011’s hottest hairstyles straight from the runways of New York Fashion Week. This year, Sonya Metzler, creative director at Vim Fitness Spa and Salon in Cambridge, Mass., joined Aveda’s styling team backstage. Metzler shares her top three hair trends with Blast and gives us tips on how to achieve them.

Buns and knots

With the success of “Black Swan,” it’s no surprise that buns and knots made the list. Besides these updos’ homage to Natalie Portman’s character Nina, these ballet-inspired hairdos are perfect for the warmer weather. “This look beats the heat and humidity, keeping you cool and looking elegant,” says Metzler.

Where she saw it: Christian Siriano, Sophie Theallet and Jason Wu

Where we’ve seen it: At the 2011 Academy Awards, Sandra Bullock and Hilary Swank both wore buns.

How to do it: Pull hair into a ponytail either high on the head or at the nape of your neck. Secure hair with an elastic and twist into a bun, fastening with bobby pins. Hold the look in place with Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray. “For a truly up-to-the-moment look, add texture and interest with twists, braids and micro-crimping,” adds Metzler.

Smooth curls, like these at ORGANIC by John Patrick, are sexy and flirty. (Media Credit/Jon Gurinsky)

Smooth and soft curls

There’s something naturally feminine about soft, loose curls, and this hairstyle is perfect to go along with flirty, flowy spring and summer dresses. “This is a style that moves beautifully and works well for both day and evening,” says Metzler.

Where she saw it: ORGANIC by John Patrick

Where we’ve seen it: Celine Dion and Amy Adams sported this look at this year’s Academy Awards.

How to do it: Prep damp hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother to prevent flyaways and with Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam for volume and texture. Part hair wherever you wish and blow dry hair with a round brush for extra volume and shine. Use a one-inch curling iron to make waves, working in sections from bottom to top. Rake through with fingers or a wide-tooth comb and finish with a light mist of Aveda Air Control Hair Spray.

Natural texture

Natural texture, seen here at Rodarte, is playful. (Media Credit/Jon Gurinsky)

Rodarte’s “young and innocent coif” was a standout at this year’s Fashion Week. “It has a playful and organic feel,” says Metzler. “The swooping side part is a little bit retro, and the barrette you choose infuses the style with your personality.”

Where she saw it: Rodarte

Where we’ve seen it: Scarlett Johansson, Florence Welch and Michelle Williams chose natural-textured hair at the Academy Awards.

How to do it: Blow dry your hair straight, using your fingers instead of a brush to achieve more texture. Create an imperfect part on the left side of your head. Rub a nickel-sized dollop of Aveda’s Light Elements Texturizing Crème in your hands. Tousle and scrunch your hair to create texture and body. Finish with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray. To add more personality to the look, secure a thick barrette to the left side, just above your ear.

The naturally-occurring compound adenosine helps the skin produce collagen and elastin

In the sea of anti-aging creams, serums and lotions that floods stores everywhere, choosing what to buy can be dizzying. Rows of products boast ingredients such as retinol, hydroquinone and alpha and beta hydroxy acids, but the new Easeamine Skin Care Collection is bringing a breakthrough ingredient to anti-aging skin care: adenosine.

Adenosine is a naturally-occurring compound found throughout the body that increases the skin’s production of collagen and elastin, proteins that reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. James G. Dobson, Jr., Ph.D., discovered adenosine’s skin-repairing qualities at the University of Massachusetts Medical School while researching how aging affects heart function. Through Easeamine’s Adenosine Skin Technology, adenosine is delivered to the lower layers of the skin, where it also increases blood flow to the skin’s outer layers and increases cell size, making the skin look smoother and fuller.

The company behind Easeamine, Carmel Laboratories, Inc., reports that the skin line also decreases roughness, dryness and sallowness of the skin. In clinical trials conducted by International Research Services, Inc., participants experienced a 38 percent improvement in skin dryness, a 26 percent improvement in skin elasticity, an up to 48 percent improvement in skin firmness, a 22 percent improvement in skin tone, a 40 percent improvement in fine lines and wrinkles and a 42 percent improvement in overall appearance.

“Scientists and dermatologists have long sought topical treatments that stimulate collagen production in the skin,” Dobson said. “But until the use of adenosine in Easeamine, the products available were limited to invasive treatments or chemical solutions.”

Not only is its breakthrough ingredient naturally-occurring, but Easeamine, unlike many of its competitors, is formulated without parabens, preservatives, mineral oils, artificial fragrance, artificial colors or dyes. Even better? It’s American-made, and it’s not tested on animals.

Easeamine is sold exclusively online at www.easeamine.com. A portion of the profits — “nearly all,” according to the product website — goes towards the Teresian Carmelite, a monastic community in Millbury, Mass., and its charitable programs benefiting the underprivileged through education.

The Easeamine Skin Care Collection

Easeamine Cleanser, $26, soothes, moisturizes and removes impurities from the skin with aloe, marshmallow root extract and grapefruit seed extract.

Easeamine Revitalizing Toner, $29, detoxifies and refreshes skin with witch hazel, chamomile and aloe.

Easeamine Day Crème, $76, is a lightweight, antioxidant-packed moisturizer with Vitamins A, C and E.

Easeamine Night Crème, $138, helps moisturize, regenerate and restore the skin.

Easeamine Eye Crème, $98, reduces puffiness, dark under-eye circles and crow’s feet.

Jockey has spent the past few weeks surprising 250 lucky ladies at 13 spas in six cities across the country as part of their Random Acts of Luxe campaign. Winners were given free spa and salon treatments, free beauty products, and Jockey Luxe gift bags.

Now, Jockey wants to give one of our Blast readers a Jockey No Panty Line Promise Luxe gift set!

Mo Moorman, director of public relations at Jockey International, said that the idea for the campaign came from a survey conducted by Jockey earlier this year. The survey found that 57 percent of American women have been struggling financially to purchase new apparel items, and that 40 percent of American women admit that the economy has made it more difficult for them to get their favorite beauty treatments.

“With so many women cutting back on life’s little luxuries, the survey also showed us that most would like to be surprised with a pampering gift,” said Moorman. “At Jockey, we understand that every woman deserves to be pampered but can’t always afford to do so.”

In front of the Newbury St. location of Lush, a handmade soap and natural cosmetics store, a small group of female employees wore nothing but barrels reading “Time For An Oil Change Or We’ll Lose It All” on Wednesday. The small protest was a result of Lush’s campaign against the Unites States Government’s ongoing support of Canadian tar sands oil.

Tar sands are a mixture of clay, sand, water, and bitumen, which is a glutinous and heavy black oil. Since tar sands cannot be pumped from the ground, they are generally strip mined using open-pit techniques. Because of its viscous nature, bitumen requires lighter hydrocarbons and water to be mixed in, which leads to a significant amount of fresh water being boiled and potentially poisoned. The production of tar sands emits three times more greenhouse gases than conventional oil.

The majority of tar sands production in Canada occurs in Alberta, and according to a press release from Lush, could turn an area the size of Florida into a toxic sacrifice zone.

"This is the most destructive project on the planet", said Emily Calvin, a Lush Harvard Square employee who was participating in the protest. "We are working on all of our dependence on tar sands and promoting renewable energy".

Lush is launching the campaign because they believe that the government needs to cease the subsidization of tar sands, and invest the billions of dollars into wind and solar power, as well as fuel efficient cars. For the next two weeks all of Lush’s locations nationwide (103 in all) will be transformed into campaign centers with pictures of deforestation and open pit mining strewn throughout the stores, while leaflets supporting the Rainforest Action Network will be handed out to customers.

The protest was met with general confusion by pedestrians who did not necessarily stop long enough to know what was going on, let alone sign postcards for President Obama encouraging he reallocate funds currently used for tar sands into renewable energy.

The Wild Country Rose bath bomb was created for the two week campaign and all of the proceeds will go towards the Rainforest Action Network’s efforts to end tar sand production.
Urea, found in urine, is in many of your fav products. Before you Nair your legs or slather on that lotion, read this!

Have you ever read the ingredients to your favorite beauty products only to discover the word "urea" on the label? If so, you’re probably wondering why that word sounds so familiar… then it hits you; urea sounds like urine! As gross as it sounds, the majority of your favorite products contain urea, but before you throw them away in disgust, you should keep reading.

Urea, also known as carbamide, is an organic compound that is essentially a waste product of digested protein that gets filtered through the kidneys and is expelled from the body through urine. However, the urea that is often found in cosmetics is made from synthetic ammonia and carbon dioxide.

Initially, urea was discovered by the French chemist Hillaire Rouelle in 1773. Just 55 years later it became the first organic compound to be created synthetically.

So why is it used in beauty products? Urea slows down the loss of moisture from a product; when used in skin care products it increases the water content of the top layers of the skin. Urea also minimizes the change in the pH balance of a product when other ingredients are added to that product.

One important factor of urea is that it acts as a preservative; it helps to control the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms. Without urea, our beauty products wouldn’t last nearly as long as they do once they are opened.

Some beauty products that contain urea include Nair, Veet, hair conditioners, body lotions (such as Eucerin), teeth whitening products, skin softeners, bath oils, facial cleansers, and cosmetics such as eye makeup, facial makeup, makeup removers, tanning/bronzing lotions, and cuticle removers.

The ingredients you should be looking for are urea, carbamide, imidazolidinyl urea, and diazolidinyl urea (which is found in the preservative Germaben).

Diazolidinyl urea can also be found in baby wipes, household detergents, and bubble baths.

Imidazolidinyl urea and diazolidinyl urea are chemically related, therefore they are used in the same way. Both preservatives act as formaldehyde releasers (this is what makes them preservatives).

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review board (CIR) has found urea to be safe as used up to 10 percent, imidazolidinyl urea safe as used up to one percent, and diazolidinyl urea safe with qualifications up to a maximum of 0.5 percent.

Allergic reactions to imidazolidinyl urea may result in a rash on your skin; however it is not a common cause of allergic reactions when compared to other preservatives. Therefore it is often found in beauty products that are labeled "hypoallergenic."

If you are unsure about the ingredients found in your beauty products your best bet is to contact the company that makes the product. They will be able to provide you with all the pertinent information.

You can relax though, there is no one peeing in your favorite beauty products.

Even when it comes to beauty, you are what you eat

Skin is the largest organ of the human body, yet people have a tendency to ignore it. That is until we notice a wrinkle or a blemish that seems to have appeared over night. At that point, we’re panicking to find any cure to our embarrassing dilemma no matter how obscure it sounds. Perhaps it is time to care for your skin before you react to it. How should you care for your skin you ask? It’s simple…from the inside.

According to nutritionist and co-formulator of GliSODin Skin Nutrients, Paula Simpson, drinkable beauty is "a functional food defined as ‘those foods that encompass potentially healthful products including any modified food or ingredient that may provide a health benefit beyond the traditional nutrients it contains.’"

In simpler terms, a food that may have extra health benefits in them other than their known nutrients.

Simpson said that the idea of beauty from the inside "stemmed from the Asian and European markets. These women look at total beauty from a holistic perspective; to protect their bodies from accelerated aging with antioxidant rich diets and effective topical skincare programs."

Now you’re wondering, what foods will produce these cosmetic benefits?

The answer, according to Simpson, is foods that contain high sources of antioxidants, because they will "help to combat the damaging effects of free radicals (toxins that have been linked with accelerated aging). The richest sources of antioxidants include those from berries, carotenoids (tomatoes and carrots) citrus, and green leafy vegetables. Selenium rich foods such as oats, turkey, and Brazil nuts can help to promote healthy immunity to ward off free radical damage on the skin."

Another way to promote healthy looking skin is to drink plenty of fluids, especially water. "If you are not getting enough fluids on a daily basis then your skin will be the first to show signs of this," explains Simpson.

The website for GliSODin Skin Nutrients calls the product "ingestible skin care for beautiful, healthy skin." Simpson said the product was created to protect the body from accelerated aging as well as "to promote optimal skin health."

SOD stands for superoxide dismutase which is an enzyme found in the human body that reduces potentially harmful toxins. It is also the key ingredient in GliSODin.

Simpson believes if you include antioxidant rich foods and drinks to your normal diet, "you are essentially boosting your intake of specific nutrients to help support a healthy immune system.”

“By maintaining healthy immunity, you will feel well and look well!"

You don't have to spend a cent on our beauty solutions!

Ah, summertime: refreshing cocktails, days at the beach, s’mores over a campfire…and hair so frizzy it looks like you’ve been electrocuted? Let’s face it: we wait all year for this season, but it isn’t without its own beauty woes. And these days, who has the money to spend on fancy products? The good news: you don’t need Angelina Jolie’s bank account, hair stylist or dermatologist to be gorgeous this summer. We’re spilling the dirt on beauty steals you didn’t even know you already had. Blast is sharing some alternate uses for products already in your cabinet, and the best news? They work!

Is the hot weather giving you greasy hair? Are you camping and unable to shower? Forget shelling out the big bucks on trendy dry shampoos; some baby powder or cornstarch works just fine. Just sprinkle a little on your roots, leave it there for a couple of minutes to soak up the oil, rub it out with your fingers and voila!

Is the humidity turning your hair into a frizzy mess? Have no fear,‚ just head to your kitchen. Rub a few drops of olive oil together in your hands and lightly pat onto dry or damp hair. If your hair tends to be greasy, apply it to the ends of your hair only to smooth any split ends. It may sound gross, but mayonnaise also works wonders on dry, frizzy hair. Apply a small amount of it as you would conditioner, cover your head with a shower cap and leave it on for up to 30 minutes, rinse it out and then shampoo. Or try mixing 1/3 cup of apple cider vinegar with 1 quart of water and pour it through your hair in the shower in lieu of your regular conditioner, then rinse it out. Do this once a week. Depending on your hair length and your preference, you may have to experiment with the ratio. Another super easy and totally free fix is to simply end your shower with a quick rinse of cool water, which will seal the hairs’ cuticles and leave your mane smooth, shiny and manageable.

Summer’s heat and humidity can wreak havoc on acne-prone skin. But there’s no need to shell out lots of dough on expensive skincare products or subject your skin to harsh chemicals, perfumes, dyes and preservatives. There are a plethora of homemade skincare options – so many that we couldn’t list them all. But don’t worry, we chose from some of our favorites. Do you have oatmeal and baking soda in your pantry? Grind 2 teaspoons of oatmeal (a coffee grinder will work just fine), mix it with 1 teaspoon of baking soda and slowly add water to make a paste. Gently rub the paste onto your face and rinse well. Or raid your medicine cabinet and take out some aspirin, which is a natural source of salicylic acid, a popular ingredient in acne products. Crush 3-5 tablets (un-coated plain white pills) and mix the powder with water to form a paste. Gently rub the paste onto your skin and leave it on until dry. Now rinse and enjoy your new smooth skin. Feeling a little adventurous? Add a couple squirts of honey to the aspirin powder and then add the water to form a paste. After cleansing, always splash your face with cold water to close the pores.

Does your skin get super oily in the summer? Try a homemade toner. You’ll have to experiment with the recipe, but start off with 2/3 part water to 1/3 part apple cider vinegar (ACV). If your skin can handle it, eventually move up to a 50/50 concoction. We recommend using distilled or filtered water. Shake the mix well, soak a cotton ball with it, and apply it to the face each night after cleansing. ACV is packed with vitamins and minerals and is, among many things, known to help regulate oil production. If you’ve got some tea tree oil or want to shell out some bucks to buy some, add a few drops to the toner for an added bacteria-killing benefit. Warning: this toner does not smell good. But if you want clear, radiant skin, get over it!

Make sure your legs are bikini ready by exfoliating for a closer shave, a more even tan and fewer ingrown hairs. The aspirin mask mentioned above does wonders at sloughing off dead skin and eradicating those pesky ingrowns. Great alternatives to store-bought body scrubs (can you believe Fresh sells one made with brown sugar for $65?!) are ridiculously simple. Mix 1 cup of granulated sugar or brown sugar and 1/2 cup of oil – any vegetable oil will do. Sea salt and Epsom salts are wonderful at exfoliating the skin, and can be used all over the body; just mix 1/2 cup of the salts with 1/2 cup of vegetable, olive, or baby oil, or simply scrub your skin with some salts mixed with a little water.

Got dry legs? Exfoliate them, of course! Also, try using hair conditioner as a substitute for shaving cream.

Hot summer days equal embarrassing sweat and odor. Forget expensive “clinical strength” antiperspirants that contain aluminum (yuck!) and stick to the basics: Rubbing baking soda or cornstarch onto dry armpits should do the trick. If sweaty, stinky feet are a problem, brew a strong batch of black tea, let it cool, and soak your feet in it for 20-30 minutes. The pore-closing tannins in black tea will solve your problem. Or take Cosmopolitan magazine’s advice and do this routine every night for two weeks: soak a cloth in some strong black tea, allow it to cool, and put it on each armpit for five minutes. If excess sweating has caused some BO and your deodorant just isn’t cutting it, soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it to your armpits. Don’t worry, the vinegary smell will disappear within a few minutes.

Spent too long sunbathing and now you’re paying for it with a sunburn? Don’t distress! As long as your burn isn’t blistering or oozing, try some of these remedies. Apply a cloth soaked in apple cider vinegar to the affected areas, and then apply a moisturizer, preferably one containing aloe and/or vitamin e, since ACV is drying. Add Epsom salts or oatmeal to your bathwater and relax. Soak a cloth in a mixture of warm (not hot!) water and dissolved baking soda and apply it to your skin. Got a cucumber? It’s not just for salads and soothing your eyes; rub your skin with its cool slices. This one is strange, but it works: soak a cloth in cool milk and apply it to your skin, leaving it on for about 20 minutes, then rinse. Plain yogurt can also do wonders. Apply it to the burn, leave it on for about 10 minutes and rinse with cool water. Another, less strange, solution is to make some tea (any kind will do), drink it, relax and apply the cooled tea bags to your burn.

It’s no mystery that chlorine wreaks havoc on your hair. But why spend money on clarifying shampoo when you can use what you already have? Once again apple cider vinegar earns a gold star: rinse your hair with it in the shower to remove product and chemical build-up. Baking soda also offers a solution: mix 1 tablespoon or so of it with your shampoo in your hand, suds as usual, leave it on for a few minutes, rinse and enjoy chlorine-free locks. Another awesome tip? Before swimming, wet your hair and apply your conditioner to it but do not rinse it out; this will prevent the chlorine from penetrating your hair. After swimming, be sure to shampoo and condition as usual.

Miss Boston was put on by FELT in an effort to find the ultimate local model and the pretty face of Boston for the year. The three-week competition gave some beautiful and talented Bostonians an opportunity for exciting exposure, said FELT Marketing director Shannon Finks. Now in its second year, Finks called it one of the “sexiest events of the summer.”

Marciano beat out about 80 entries into the Miss Boston Contest for the title. Through a pre-screening, 12 participants were selected to compete in three categories: semi-formal wear, bikini wear and personality. Only seven advanced to the second round and five lucky ladies participated in the finals.

It was the semi-formal wear competition on Saturday night and Adelina Keshishian, Alexa O’Hara, Carly Marciano, Cyann Ribeiro and Kristin Phelps graced the stage.

“You have to stunt your stuff the best you got and pray it’s enough” said first-runner-up Alexandra O’Hara. “It sucks that I lost by two votes, but at least I played the game. I’d rather lose by two votes than two hundred. Two votes means I gave Carly a good run for her money.”

When it came to voting, the judges “" various local celebrities and personalities in Boston fashion “" held 50 percent of the vote while crowd participation held the other 50.

“We all had no clue who was going to win” said second-runner-up and Somerville native model/actress Cyann Ribeiro. “The crowd was hootin’ and hollerin’ for everybody so loud I couldn’t think up there. I just kept telling myself to smile. That was all that mattered.”

As the judges deliberated and votes were counted, the crowd kept the party going. DJ Freddy B from Las Vegas spun the latest tracks as everyone on the crowded floor took a break from cheering for their friends, tossed back their drinks and showed off their dance moves.

“You gotta show up and cheer for your girl” said attendee Chantal Keys. Keys had grown up with contestant Kristin Phelps and came to every stage of the competition to support her “homegirl.”

“There’s no way you could get me on stage in a bikini but if anyone’s gonna do it Kristin is the girl for the job. I hate going to the beach with that girl.”

Dean Cleary, a Boston local, also attended. He doesn’t know any of the contestants personally, yet. “Maybe one day one of them will be my lady” he said of the girls on stage. “A guy can dream. And buy the runner-up a drink. We’ll see how far tonight takes me.”

Finally the lights turned down and the Black Eyed Peas blared from the DJ booth: “I gotta feeling that tonight’s gonna be a good good night.” The contestants entered the stage again to hear who had won the title. A few more jokes were told, and the crowd almost quieted for a second as they waited to hear who had won.

“I didn’t think they called my name at first” Marciano remembered. “But then everyone pushed me forward and I was just like “ËœOh. I won’.”

Marciano shed a few tears and shook the hands of her friends as she was on the stage at FELT. “Thank you to everyone” she cried, “you don’t know how much this means to me.”

“The life of Miss Boston is a good life” said D’Angona in the last hour of her title as Miss Boston. “It’s been a crazy year, of photo shoots and appearances, free Red Sox tickets, and free booze.”

As winner, Marciano won an all expenses paid trip to the Caribbean, a magazine spread in Upscale Living, the title “Face of FELT” for all 2009 campaigns and a fashion shoot with Stewart Smith.

“I don’t know which part I’m the most excited about” Marciano said, “but I’m sure as hell going to enjoy the next year living it up in Boston. I wonder if this title will get me any free food.”

Blast’s editor was totally rooting for finalist Kristin Phelps, but says he has “nothing but love” for everyone who competed. You’d say that too.

Any woman knows that the hottest accessories may not always be the most practical. You know how it works: you get a clutch that is so pretty but doesn’t have room for your keys, your lip gloss, your cell phone and camera.‚ But opting for a regular bag means‚ that you end up putting so much in it you’re using two seats on the subway or hitting people as you walk down the street.

Needless to say, when we heard of a new bag line claiming to be chic and useful for the things you need the most, we were skeptical. But after checking it out, we found out that these bags are pretty darn good. And fashionable.

Suzanne’s Discreet Chic Accessories has the bag that Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Kate Beckinsale, Leona Lewis, Katy Perry, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson and Miley Cyrus are all sporting, and that’s a short list.

The line, created by Suzanne Gabos of Tampa, Fla., is the most stylish and subtle way to carry, protect and organize personal products.

With a practical “Hide and Chic” clutch where you can discreetly store tampons, a Fem-Tote case created to go into your bag so you an find special items easily; and a hilarious -‚ but oh so truly needed‚ -‚ Panty Pouch where you can keep a change of clean undies and avoid wearing dirty undergarments the morning after, even your mom would be proud to see you buy one.

The company was established in September 2007. Gabos’ sense of style, fashion and organization‚ inspires the‚ line of classy, yet functional traveling cases to address the needs of females between the ages of 12 and 60. The Fem-Tote and the Panty Pouch were designed to ensure feminine product freshness and cleanliness, with style, dignity and discretion.

The designs simply focus on the active woman, whether she is traveling, working, playing or merely, looking for a way to carry her things.

“In life, women deal with many pleasures; however, the menstrual cycle is not one of them,” said Gabos, in an interview with Blast. “The Fem-Tote will make this ‘period’ of time more pleasant. It is my hope that my designs will connect with women everywhere and provide them with the freedom that comes from being confident and secure in their everyday lives.”

The bags may not bring an end to the bloating, cramps, headaches and moodiness, but they will make things easier to find and prettier to carry. Always have to look at the glass as half full, right ladies?

The bags vary in sizes and come in different colors, designs and fabrics ranging from $42 to $140 and are all available on-line.

Men: follow these styling guidelines for perfect hair at every age (*Key Takeaway: Don’t be afraid of a little pomade!):

Here’s a little help from beauty & hair guru Yves Durif.

1. Lose the gel. “Pastes and Shines are in,” says Yves.‚ “You want to be able to run your hands through your hair – or somebody else’s – without the drama of being stuck in hair product.”

2.‚ Go bald gracefully.‚ Yves says, “Men who lose their hair should cut it as short as possible.‚ Hiding it is unflattering and indicates a lack of confidence.”

3.‚ Don’t forget the details. Yves insists, “Sideburns are a man’s most important accessory.‚ Whether the hair is super short or very long, sideburns are a must.‚ They add structure and tone to the face.”

4. You DO need product. “Simple finishing products make a big difference. They add texture and style to a good haircut.”

5.‚ Make the most of Gray. “Structure Pearl Finish ($25) is ideal for creating the very popular ‘silver look’ women die for.‚ Its prismatic formula adds gorgeous dimension to the hair color without looking too shiny.”

Yves Durif began his career at the famed Jaques Dessange Salon in Paris, and has been cutting and styling the hair of celebrities, CEO and influencers all over the world.‚ Featured in numerous magazines and television programs, Yves is at the center of the style world in his new flagship salon at New York City’s Carlyle Hotel.

So April is not just about the great looks you will put together with the great deals you will find at your favorite stores. No, April is also about caring for the earth and doing something special for Earth Day, April 22.

However, if you’re not the type of woman that plants a tree or join PETA we have a cute‚ alternative‚ for you so you can look the part. One of our favorite stylists at SalonCapri, Nick Penna Jr., has shared‚ some neat hair tips to create‚ dreadlocks, the easy way.

Start by sectioning off your hair into half-inch sized pieces.‚ Apply a wax to the section of hair smoothly. By using a comb, tease the root area of the hair and begin to twist the hair slowly.‚ Spray with a light hairspray and you twist and use a flat iron to hold the hair in place and move it up and down to create a “dreadlock” look. Not only will this look real but you won’t have to shave your hair afterward.

Now, in order to do‚ something‚ that will actually help Mother Earth, Penna also gave us these earth-friendly beauty suggestions, like skipping on shampoo to conserve hair products and save money on your hair.

Shower daily, but don’t always shampoo. Just wash out hair with water and dry it normally.‚ Three times a week use shampoo and wash hair thoroughly. By reducing the amount of times you shampoo a week, you can also save on fading your color.

“Washing your hair every other or every third day is fine and actually better for your hair. Invest in a good shampoo. While it may cost more up front, it lasts much longer and you don’t need as much,” Penna said.

Now that you got the look part down for April 22, start looking for a charity that will be hands-on protecting the environment so that you can donate some of the money you will save on those hair products.

Spa Week has some fabulous giveaways this month with‚ something‚ for everyone, a $1,000 Spa Week gift card, a pair of Manolos, a case of wine, a free vacation to Peter Island Resort, beauty products, and more. Yes, you read it right.‚

Spa Week Media Group Ltd., ‚ an integrated boutique marketing and public relations firm that specializes in the niche spa industry was founded in 2003 by‚ Cheryl Reid of New York. By reaching spa owners directly and offering treatments, regularly costing hundreds of dollars for only $50 the concept of having a website promoting these deals grew at a great rate. At first only having 25 spas‚ participating, there are now‚ Spa Week chapters in more than 21 cities nationwide.‚ ‚ ‚

“In three short years, Spa Week has gone from one of Manhattan’s best kept secrets to a nationwide spa enthusiasts’ dream. ‚ My goal is to have Spa Week in every American city that has a high proliferation of day spas to accommodate eager consumers looking for affordable indulgence and a peek into the future of wellness. I’m confident that the future of Spa Week will assist in educating Americans on the importance of spa as a part of a new and improved healthy lifestyle campaign,” said Reid.‚

It is very easy to maneuver through the website, finding your city and spas offering deals near you. After booking your treatment you can check out the giveaways tab and enter to win as many goodies as you like, equally simple.‚

This month Spa Week and Rioja wine are bringing you a chance to win a pair of Manolo Blahniks or a case of delicious red wine. ‚ Heroes of the beauty industry like Chris McMillan and Pat McGrath, from Allure Magazine, reveal their secret beauty weapons this month too and give away the fabulous products and tools they speak of.

With the economy slowly settling, and your cuticles probably‚ suffering form those at-home manicures, you are better of booking an affordable treatment at Spa Week that will cheer you up and not leave your wallet empty. And if you don’t want to get a treatment, you should still enter to win those Manolos!

With everyone from Anne Hathaway to Eva Longoria, it seems that hair buns are the latest look to be gracing the fashion runways for summer and fall. Celebrities and runway models are sporting their buns everywhere, and not necessarily the ones made of steel.

Our pal Nick Penna, Jr. of SalonCapri, told us this is a versatile look that can be dressed up or down. He told Blast the steps to realizing this hot-off-the styling chair look. Go ahead and get cooking.

Penna explained that the key to mastering this look is to create a well-defined part. “I’d suggest a side part to draw more attention to your face. A part in the middle of your hair can sometimes appear too harsh, depending on the shape of your face,” the “Best of Boston” stylist said. Use a lightweight styling pomade or texturizer to smooth the hair along your part and create a sleek finish.

To achieve a wavier look like Reese Witherspoon’s for example, skip on the styling pomade and wait until the look is complete to use a finishing spray. Penna suggests Shu Uemura’s Liquid Fabric Texturizing Spray as an easy-to-manage product.

Sweep your hair back into a low ponytail and secure it with an elastic that best matches your hair color. This should be a tight ponytail and it should be securely fastened at the base of your neck. With a firm grip, pull the end of the ponytail clockwise around the elastic, making sure to smooth the hair as it is being wrapped.

After the circular shape of the bun has been created, begin to pin the loose ends with bobby pins. Secure as necessary. “You want your bun to feel secure and cleanly wrapped without flyaways and extra strands of hair sticking out,” added Penna.

To finish the style, use a flexible finishing spray. Don’t be afraid to spray the bun, part and sides of your hair to ensure a sleek look. If you’re aiming for a messier approach, use your fingers to further add texture to your waves and then finish by spraying. If you add sexy smokey eyes you are ready to sport the do with sexy heals and a classy dress. ‚ With innocent light makeup and pink lips you can wear the colorful spring palettes seen in a lot of runways this season to take over the arm weather.

(ARA)- With award season in full swing, all eyes are on celebrities and their red carpet style. For every A-lister, looking great at an awards show is almost as important as remembering an acceptance speech. While most celebrities have a team to get them picture perfect, there are some simple tricks you can do at home to make sure you’re camera ready for your next big event whether it’s a first date or family reunion.

Giuliana Rancic, host of E! News and a red carpet staple, shares some simple beauty tips that are sure to make you look and feel your best all night long — without a celebrity-sized budget.

Hydrate: Give yourself a healthy and glowing complexion by getting plenty of rest the night before the event, and stay hydrated during the day. When water gets too boring, add a splash of cranberry or pomegranate juice. The antioxidants will add to your glow.

Relax: If you’re prone to getting pre-event jitters, it’s important to find a way to relax beforehand so you can arrive feeling your best. Remember that confidence shows. To de-stress, she suggests meeting a friend for yoga, getting a full body massage or putting on some fun music to dance around to as you get ready.

Be prepared: Try on your outfit the day before to assure that you have the right shoes and accessories. You’ll feel much more relaxed on the day of the big event knowing that you have everything ready. It also pays to have a Plan B outfit in mind, just in case. And while you have your outfit on, pull out your digital camera and snap a couple photos of yourself to practice finding your picture-perfect pose the way models do.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-9510" title="8386_b46_rgb" src="http://blastmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/8386_b46_rgb-241x300.jpg" alt="Giuliana Rancic, host of E! News shares some simple beauty tips that are sure to make you look and feel like a million bucks, without spending that much

Say cheese: You can count on there being photos taken at any big event, so your smile needs to be camera-ready. A lip stain is your best bet for long-lasting lip color, and a bold shade will make your smile extra eye-catching. Of course, no matter how bright the color, it can’t hide dull teeth. Giuliana swears by Crest Whitestrips to make sure her teeth are sparkling before the big event. “My latest beauty secret is to use new Crest Whitestrips Advanced Seal two weeks before my big event. Because the strips mold to my teeth, I can talk, drink water and go about my routine while I’m wearing them! They fit perfectly into my busy schedule.”

Finally, eat right: You don’t want to be hungry during the event, but you also need to look your best in that dress. On the day of a big event, eat a small meal with protein in the morning, like an egg white omelet with veggies and feta cheese. Then, in the afternoon, stick with liquids like a fruit smoothie, which gives you energy without making you feel too full or bloated.

Following these simple steps will help you feel like you had your own personal glam squad for your next big night out.

With this already overrated recession lingering on and businesses offering only some discounted prices or sales, many women are wondering what to do about their beauty routine. Is it prudent to go and spend $200 on a sugar scrub massage? Will Obama be disappointed if you get your $50 French lotion? Well, fear dry skin and critics no longer. Chloe&Jane, an all-natural skin care line, is offering quality spa products for less than expected.

Laura Albin (aka Jane) founded Chloe & Jane in 2007 after an “aha” moment in the shower with her friend’s, Wendy Viscuglia‚ (aka Chloe), handmade sugar scrub.‚ Realizing the importance of taking time to pamper yourself, she created a collection of bath and body products to inspire, renew, and entertain. What started with one scrub is now a five-product line in three delicious but subtle fresh spa scents that has celebs like Debra Messing and Christina Milian singing it praises.

“The idea, the initial idea, started in the kitchen of a friend of mine (Wendy Viscuglia), and she’s totally into going to the spa and I’m into buying soap at Target,” said Albin, co-founder, who started mixing ingredients for scrubs shortly after trying Viscuglia’s. “So Chloe became her image, a more fru-fru gal, and Jane was just plain Jane. We thought about this to show the two sides of the product, it’s a great line with fragrances that don’t overpower and won’t scare the people like me but it has high quality for the high maintenance women who want their spa needs fulfilled. The people I know are either one or the other type of consumer, but everyone likes this spa at home line”

In wanting to bring the products to “spa veterans and spa virgins” alike, Albin thought of possible recipes and packaging ideas. She came up with an eco-chic line made of paraben and artificial dye-free products and went with a recyclable packaging. Plus, she decided to never test on animals.

“It took 9 months to put everything together and we have been in the market for little less than a year. We didn’t expect it to be so well received and be such a great product so in that sense it has been very fun to bring the spa to people who have never been to the spa. We definitely want the brand to grow even more than body care, that’s the launching point for us, but we’d rather stay in the retail market rather than higher end stores. That way we reach more places and have the line be about girlfriends and taking care of yourself,” Albin added.

Each item smells and feels amazing with a choc full of “good for you ingredients;” like grapeseed oil, which helps in cell renewal, or Japanese green tea leaf extract, known to reduce puffiness and is packed with antioxidants. ‚ But most appealing, oddly enough, are the product’s designs. Chloe&Jane prints fun anecdotes on the side of every package. From crazy waxing stories to do-it-yourself nightmare experiences. Once you see those little tales, you know the product is authentic, made and used by women who understand what women want.

Like Albin, also a mother of two, explained, it is always amazing to see how you can be great friends with someone so different from you. The stories added to the packaging help in creating a community amongst women who may be very unalike but can still form strong bonds despite it all.

“From a female perspective there’s this idea that you should exercise your passions and hope, follow your ambitions and that’s what we’re doing as far as the business. There’s a need to have good natural products that are not so serious, though, so we want to connect to our customers and we want to let you know its cool to be green while having fun and having a laugh,” Albin said.‚

All the items retail from $12-$26 and are available online. For a limited time Blast readers can also enjoy 20% off the Chloe&Jane product line. Enter the code: Blast48 at the website’s check out, and if you’d like to win a spa kit enter the giveaway by February 28!

We ladies have all been there, done that, and will more than likely do it again … fake something! We wear push-up bras to give us a more voluptuous boost, skinny it out in skinny jeans to make us appear longer legged. Even strut around in stiletto boots to make our 5’4″ frames appear to be a more modelesque‚ 5’9″. (Of course if you’re me, you will show your grace by falling down a flight of stairs while wearing them! Jump up, dust yourself off and try again, hence the “do it again” scenario.)

Since we can’t seem to help but lash out against our natural born beauty… it doesn’t seem so bizarre to bat our eyes at a new trend that seems to be taking on a view of its own!

Fake eyelashes are all the rage. From the individual ones that you place near the edge of the eye to the full eyelashes, they are a beauty obsession among many women, and in some cases a must-have for nights out on the town.

False eyelashes have been around since 1916, when American film director D.W. Griffith was filming his epic, “Intolerance.” Griffith wanted actress Seena Owen to pop on screen so he invented lashes that brushed her cheeks, so her eyes would appear larger than life. A wig maker wove human hair through fine gauze, which was then gummed to Owen’s eyelids.‚ They continued to be used in films and were also loved by everyday women looking to enhance their look.

Now fast forward almost 100-years and you will still find women winking over their fake and flirty lashes. Only now they are more practical in design but much more daring in style, and selection. Basic black is the most popular of course, but if you’re looking for a more Glamazon look, you can also find: feathered, furry, glittered and show-girly. It’s all a matter of preference, taste and in some cases how daring you dare to be!

Seeing someone in false eye lashes can make a girl wonder… “How did she get those things on?” It’s not exactly rocket science, but it’s not for the shake-y handed either. It does take a little patience, a good mirror and a little insight on how to apply them.

Here are some suggestions I was given by make-up artists:

Apply a thin layer of liquid black eyeliner

Curl eyelashes with an eyelash curler

Before gluing fake eyelashes, lay them over your natural eyelashes to make sure they are the right length

If lashes are too long, trim with scissors from the outer edge until you have the right size

Squeeze out glue (I use the eyelash plastic container, why not)

I use the back of my tweezers to add glue to the base of the eyelashes

Wait till the glue is tacky before applying

Lay fake eyelashes over your eye and slide down as close to the base of your real lashes

And just like that, you have stunning eyelashes!

As you can see, I have worn lashes before, and I wanted to pass on a little tip I learned. Obviously, I was over joyed at the fact I was able to put them on myself and they stayed on! But one helpful find has made my lash locking a little easier- black glue. I tried the typical white when I first started and you could see I over-used it in fear of them falling off. Even though it said the white would dry clear, when you use as much as I did, there was still little remnants of white caked on the lashes. So even though I have gotten better at application, I still prefer the darker glue. Of course, you can always have a professional put them on for you too.

If you are looking for a long term glue-less solution, you can get eyelash implants. Eyelash implants are hair follicles taken from the scalp and sewn into the lash area. It is considered a surgical treatment, but you will have long thick lashes without the need to apply any fake ones. The only down fall is that the hairs that have been transplanted, may need to be trimmed. I wonder how soon there will be a line item at my salon under Eyebrow waxing that says “Eyelash Trim -$ 25.00?” Implants are also a little pricey, so the drugstore false lashes may have to do for awhile!

If you’re into trying new things, but are a little hesitant about lashing yourself out with false eyelashes or eyelash implants, there are a few liquid alternatives. One hot new product on the market today, that won’t break the bank, is called MaxoLash. If you want the lush lashes, but on a more permanent, no muss no fuss or needle basis, Maxolash can be easily applied to your lashes like mascara. Its patented formula allows your eyelashes to grow longer and thicker within a 4 week period.‚ You just need to plan ahead if that’s the case!

Few! Who would have thought there would be so much to say about eyelashes? Even I am amazed at my findings. So get your fabulous blinkers winking with your new found lash love, it’s something to bat your eyes over!

Calling All Hair! Stressed? Tired? Need a revival? Redken has an answer to all your hair troubles.

As a coloring-obsessed, hair tool-addicted female, I am thoroughly excited for a product that actually makes my hair shine. Redken’s Chemistry System Hair Recovery Treatment takes dull hair and makes it glamorous! Don’t believe it? Ask CariDee English, winner of America’s Next Top Model who recently received a Chemistry System Treatment for her American Salon February photo shoot.

Celebrity stylist and Redken Haircolor Consultant David Stanko shares the experience of working with CariDee as well as supplying us with the lowdown we need on this groundbreaking product!

Debuting about two years ago, the Chemistry System was initially launched at a very exclusive level. Since then, it has continued to gain popularity and salon use as more and more dull-haired clients embrace this shine and body inducing product. It transforms the traditional long hair recovery treatment, involving baking and blowing into a quick procedure which often even includes a nice head massage during product application. This makes the total process of hair recovery significantly easier and more convenient for the everyday ‘hot tool addict.’

This Redken line follows the Chemistry System Promise of improved overall hair condition along with longer-lasting color results. “The Chemistry System is one of the biggest breakthroughs I’ve experienced in my career,” said Stanko. “I use the Chemistry System to prepare hair for color services and repair hair from mechanical abuse – and get amazing results every time!” The Chemistry System Promise or the CSP stands for Cleanse, Shot and pHix, which each refers to the different processes done to the hair during the treatment.

Thanks to technological advancement, the pHix stage only taking about five minutes, as opposed to the 25-40 min baking or blowing period of traditional products. The pHix stage delivers ingredients directly to each hair strand, extending the total benefits of the treatment. Stanko explains that with the ceramides and proteins, the treatment is a full system.

On working with Top Model, CariDee, Stanko describes her hair type as being medium textured. He worked with CariDee a few weeks prior to the Treatment, taking her natural blonde hair to another level, adding some rich lowlights. Stanko remarks that CariDee had a big personality and was very easy to work with. He used Redken’s Color Extend products on CariDee’s hair since her Chemistry Treatment was just following her color service. Color Extend products have Vitamin E and Antioxidants, which are used to combat radicals. It is important to use the appropriate shampoo for your hair type to make sure that you get the most out of the Redken products!

Is your hair feeling thirsty for the Redken Chemistry System Hair Recovery Treatment yet? Since it is exclusive to salon-only use, go to www.redken.com or call 1-800-REDKEN8 to find out pricing a saloon using the Chemistry System near you!

In an age where it seems a box of chocolates and flowers have become too clich©, what’s a Valentine to do? Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate love. Treat your sweetheart to present or activity that breaks the norm and leaves a lasting memory. Here’s Blast Magazine’s gift guide to make this February 14th one to remember.

What to Get Your Man:

He may be hard to shop for and not give you many ideas when it comes to present shopping. But whether you’re dating a serious type or have Romeo waiting at your door, we’ve got just the gift to set his heart on fire.

For the Practical Lover:

Brookstone is your answer. What other store allows you to play with innovative products, shop for your lover and have a massage in a chair all in one place? I have two favorites at Brookstone for Valentine’s Day gifts.

NAP Cuddle Blanket, $45.00

This has to be the softest, most comfortable blanket I have ever felt. Perfect for an afternoon nap or cuddling up in front of the television, this blanket can delight your sweetheart and benefit you as well! While he would probably never buy this for himself, he won’t be able to resist wrapping the both of you in it together.

Charging Valet, $29.00 or $75.00

If your boyfriend loves electronics and you constantly find his IPod, PDA, camera, and cell phone misplaced in his room, this could be the perfect gift. Made in several different finishes, Brookstone’s charging valet allows him to store and charge his electronics neatly in one location. It also has a space for his watch, money clip, loose change and whatever else he has scattered around his room. One charging valet has room for six devices, while the other only fits two electronics.

For the Sentimental Lover:

Putting thought into your present will make whatever you get him memorable. Think back to past conversations, your best memories together and try to remember something that you shared…then recreate it!

Scrapbook, $30.00 and up

Recommended for those who have been dating for a year or longer, a scrapbook is a perfect way to document your relationship and save your memories for years to come. Since you’re probably the photographer in the relationship, I’m sure you have a collection of photographs that he’d love to have a copy of and show off. Depending on how detailed you decide to make it; scrapbooks can get pricey. Perhaps fully complete the first few pages and leave the rest as a work in progress.

Autographed Sports Memorabilia, $25.00 and up

If his Sundays are spent watching the game, why not let him know you appreciate his passion for sports? There are many websites that provide an array of autographed team memorabilia for a range of prices. Depending on the popularity of his favorite team, your wallet may get lighter. My favorites include autographed baseballs, framed photos of teams and players, and jerseys. Share his love for the game and you’ll be the star of his team in no time.

What to Get Your Woman:

What do you get for the girl who has everything? A question most boyfriends have asked themselves at one point during their relationship. The answer is, get her something that comes from your heart because an expression of your feelings for her is one thing she can never have enough of.

For the Athletic Girl:

Assuming she enjoys listening to music when she’s working out or taking a power walk, get her the gift that keeps on giving.

Nike IPod Sport Kit, $29.00

The dynamic duo of Apple and Nike create a sensational product for the fan of the IPod Nano and Nike sneaker. This wireless sensor allows you to track your workout progress and get feedback on your performance. She’ll have the run of her life and have your present to thank!

For the Sentimental Girl:

Jewelry, $100 and up

Jewelry is a girl’s best friend. Silver or gold, diamonds or pearls, get her a piece that catches the eye and reminds her of you. Whether you have money to spend, or are on a tight budget, pick the jewelry item that has meaning to the two of you. Perhaps you spent a wonderful weekend at the beach this summer, check out the Tiffany’s Elsa Peretti Starfish pendant, $235.00 or Swarovski crystal Holly Starfish Pierced Earrings, $55.00. A piece of jewelry with meaning behind it makes her sparkle even brighter.

For the Adventure Queen:

Weekend Getaway, $175 and up

Whisk your woman away to secluded beach town, snowy chalet or bustling city so she can remember Valentine’s Day as a weekend affair of activities and romance. Wherever you decide to take her, make sure you have your itinerary ready with room for change. Find the best restaurants on citysearch.com and check the Internet for points of interest. She’ll love that you took the initiative to plan a weekend for two!

Themed Presents:

I am a fan of putting together themed presents and when you find out how easy it is, you will be too! Let’s take the above gifts as examples.

Cuddle Blanket paired with his favorite DVD, and a box of popcorn … a night at home is complete.

Charging valet paired with a fun new gadget whether it’s a monogrammed money clip, or the IPod Nano he’s been eyeing, he’ll love the accessory he can store on his new organizer.

A sexy piece of lingerie paired with a sex toy, box of condoms, Karma Sutra book and deliciously scented candle create a night of seduction at your fingertips.

For both of you:

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to spice things up. Show off your inner vixen and have him loving this holiday…and you like never before.

Sexy Lingerie, $40.00 and up

It’s time to show off your body and buy a present that makes you feel beautiful. The delight he’ll take in seeing your confidence and of course hot undergarments will ignite his passionate side. Perhaps surprise him with a tantalizing strip tease, or if you’re daring, come over wearing just your "present" underneath your coat.

Sex Toys, $15.00 and up

Whether you’re a long time fan of sex toys or want to try something new in the bedroom, surprising your man with a new plaything could be the best Valentine’s Day gift he’s ever received. The Internet provides a plethora of toys for anyone’s imagination and it also allows you to remain anonymous.

Show him you can be both naughty and nice this February 14th.

Want a unique piece of furniture? YogaChair is your best bet.

Made of hardwood in a lamination process, YogaChair is a new way to sit for long periods of time without damaging your body. When sitting in a regular chair, the body is constricted, but when sitting in the strange looking YogaChair, one can actually feel an extension from the pelvis upwards. With a curved shape and no back or arm rests, its seat forces the user to lean slightly forward while placing the shins in individual leg cushions, creating a sitting position that is comfortable for hours on end.

"This chair is great for everyone because all the muscles release and it offers and incredible way to sit," said Donnie Katlan, co-owner of the YogaChair business, based in Maryland. "For most people the look is hard to understand at first but once they sit on the chair they feel the difference and I just constantly hear, ‘I love it.’"

The idea originated three years ago, after a freak basketball accident left Katlan with a broken hip and several other leg injuries. His wife, Deborah, had an old kneeling chair in which Donnie was able to sit more comfortably after the accident. Regular chairs only placed pressure on his hips and after trying various types of rehab, Donnie realized the simple action of sitting in his wife’s stool helped him more with the healing.

A yogi for about 20 years, Katlan decided he would design a chair similar to the stool he had grown so fond of, thereby skipping all the stressful medical treatments. He revamped the stool’s shape and added leg support, only to be amazed by the results.

"I liked the chair because it was great for balance. I compared it to other ergonomic chairs and, by far, the angle this chair has makes all the difference in elongating the body and decreasing pressure. I sat on it every day and my knee had to bend but it wasn’t painful, very soon I had healed naturally, " he said.

Thinking he needed to share his new invention with the world, he established a company, found a manufacturer and trademarked the name YogaChair more than a year ago. Today, he has sold chairs across America and around the world to customers in Thailand, Ukraine and Israel, among others. Although he does not disclose profit or sales figures, Katlan says his business is growing.

"You can test this comparison on a regular chair. Sit on the end of your chair, feet flat on the floor with your back not touching the back of your chair. Feel how your spine extends out from your rear end. In a YogaChair you do not have to think about sitting properly. The design accomplishes that…and clients have even said that sitting on the chair has helped them loose weight," he added.

Usually shipping within two to seven days, the chair comes in six colors, and is designed for people between the heights of 4’10" through 6’2", and can handle 250 to 300 pounds. Although the original design has no back or arm support, the designs for an "executive line" are being created. As the co-owner explained, back and arm rests will be added to give the look of a regular chair; the colors will be darker, more professional, and the wood will come in a mahogany or natural stain.

Currently, children can also use the chair by placing their feet atop the shin cushions rather than placing their legs over them, but Katlan is also developing a children’s size chair. Not only can people use it at an office or home setting to relax or even meditate, younger clients will be able to sit in it while using a computer, playing video games or reading.

"I’m not interested in following fads and this doesn’t fit into the yoga items must-haves list, the point of the business is to benefit others, to develop healthy posture for kids and up. We’re getting there but there’s not a YogaChair in every home yet," said Katlan.

It felt like children’s “play makeup.”The Turquoise Masque from Abrion© wasn’t what I had expected.

The texture of this product felt as though I was placing animal fat on my face. It took about half an hour for the mask to dry, when the back of the container says it takes approximately 15 minutes.

The Abrion© Turquoise Masque left my face and neck feeling sticky, and not very refreshed. It took another half an hour for my face to feel soft again. This product would most likely work better when used with the facial care products from Abrion©, but when used by itself, it basically wasn’t very impressive.

This was not what I expected; I would have expected a natural facial product to feel a bit less fake, smell better and leave my face feeling cleansed, but it did not.

It felt like it had too much oil in it and felt like children’s “play makeup.” The scent wasn’t strong, which is sometimes a good thing, but it wasn’t a refreshing scent that most people would expect from a face masque. My face felt as though it needed to be washed after I rinsed off the facial masque. It also wasn’t very good on the factor of firming. This item is not worth its price.
