Gallo Family Vineyard's wine is just $5 a bottle!

Thanks to the Gallo Family Vineyard, a romantic Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to break the bank. Some inexpensive–but good!–wine and homemade dessert can make your evening sweet and sensible. The Moscato, a light-bodied wine with flavors of peach, honey and citrus, and Sweet Red, a light to-medium-bodied wine with flavors of apple, pear and tropical fruit, are just $5 a bottle, and pair perfectly with the below Gallo Family Vineyard’s signature recipes.

Fresh Pear Torta

For pears:

1 tablespoon unsalted butter, plus more for the cake pan

5 to 6 ripe but firm pears, such as Bartlett or Anjou, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

For cake:

2/3 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

2 large eggs, plus 1 large egg yolk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon freshly grated lemon zest

Confectioners’ sugar for dusting

Preheat oven to 375° F. Butter a 9-inch round cake pan and set aside. For pears, melt butter in a large skillet and saute the pears until just softened, about 6 minutes. Set aside. For cake, sift flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar into a large bowl. In a small bowl, whisk together melted butter, eggs, egg yolk, vanilla and lemon zest. With a wooden spoon, stir melted butter mixture into dry ingredients and blend until smooth. With a rubber spatula, fold in sauteed pears and their juices. Spoon the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until top is browned and a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool in pan, then invert onto wire rack, and invert again onto a cake plate so that the top faces up. Dust with confectioners’ sugar, if desired.

Yield: 8 servings Prep time: 30 minutes Cook time: 35 minutes

Macadamia-Crusted Apple Tart

For Macadamia Crust:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup chopped macadamia nuts or flaked almonds

For filling:

1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened

1/2 cup sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice (or a mixture of 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg, and 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves)

1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice

Preheat oven to 400° F. For crust, mix flour, melted butter, sugar, and macadamia nuts in a bowl, using your hands or a spatula. Pat on the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch springform pan. For filling, beat cream cheese, 1/4 cup of the sugar, egg, and vanilla in a medium bowl with a hand-held mixer until smooth. Pour into the prepared crust. Using the same bowl, toss the apple slices with the pumpkin pie spice, the remaining ¼ cup sugar, and the lemon juice. Attractively arrange apple slices in a circle on top of filling. Pour any juice left from the fruit on top. Bake for 22 to 25 minutes or until cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Remove to a wire rack to cool in pan for 20 minutes, then remove the sides and serve.

Yield: 8 servings Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 25 minutes

Move over, token wingman!

Susan Baxter, 32, founded Hire a Boston Wingwoman in 2010.

Susan Baxter, 32, has the solution for single Boston guys looking for love: Wingwomen. Sure, you’ve got your Bud Light-guzzling, cleavage-ogling, popped collar-wearing wingman already, but isn’t the same old “you distract the less attractive friend while I talk to the hot one” routine getting a little stale? Baxter’s wingwomen get straight to the point with confidence, class, and a well-worth-it fee: the girl you’re going after.

For clients of Baxter’s company, Hire a Boston Wingwoman, it works like this: You and a wingwoman go to a bar or a lounge, or wherever you want to go to meet chicks. You scan the room, zoom in on your potential love interest, and your wingwoman goes in for the kill. It might begin with a compliment (“I love those shoes!”) or a question (“What’s your favorite drink here?”). Then, she might say something like, “This is my friend Joe; we’re looking for a bar to go after this. Do you know of anywhere good?”

“She kind of hangs around in the background once the introduction is made,” says Baxter. “If it doesn’t work out, then the client tries another woman. And if it doesn’t seem like the woman is interested, the wingwoman can pretend to be the client’s girlfriend.”

Wingwomen are better sidekicks than wingmen, Baxter says, because “Women tend to have their guards up when they go out; maybe it’s a girl’s night and they are just out for some cocktails with their friends and aren’t looking to talk to guys. Women feel less intruded upon if a woman comes up to them. They have their guards up when a man goes up and says, ‘Hey, I’m Joe, how are you ladies this evening?’ It’s old, and it’s lame, and she’s like, ‘Oh, here we go again.’”

Even better, adds Baxter, “It’s a boost of confidence to walk in to a place with a beautiful woman by your side. Girls like competition, so if they see you with an attractive woman, they’ll think you’ve got something to offer.”

So what makes a successful wingwoman? Generally, says Baxter, they are outgoing, and unafraid to approach and strike up conversation with that intimidating, hot girl you’ve got your eye on.

“You’ve gotta play the part,” she says. “You can’t go to that trendy, upscale bar if you look like you just got out of a Red Sox game; it’s gotta be realistic. But each wingwoman has a different personality. Some are bubbly and are good for clubs, and some are more intelligent and would be good for a social networking-type party. They’re attractive, outgoing, social, and willing to go up to a woman and say, ‘Hey, where’d you get your hair done? I’m looking for a new salon in the area.’”

Baxter, who has a master’s degree in applied sociology from the University of Massachusetts, started her business in September of 2010 with the knowledge that “a lot of people are shy and are intimidated to go up to people at a bar,” she says. “People tend to just stand there at the end of the bar and wait to be approached.” Plus, she was already being a wingwoman for her guy (and girl) friends, so why not make it a business?

“My ‘aha’ moment was when I was watching an episode of the ‘Tyra Banks Show,’ and a woman was on there who was a wingwoman for her friends,” says Baxter. “And I was like, ‘Wait, that’s what I do!’ The idea had spread to New York City and to Las Vegas, and I thought, why not Boston?”

Now, Hire a Boston Wingwoman employs nearly 40 wingwomen (and counting–she’s hiring!) in their 20s, 30s and 40s. The business works with about 10 clients a weekend, with many repeat clients. Fall is the busiest time of year for the company, which Baxter attributes to several factors: “In the fall, people are coming back from their vacation or their summer fling, and are looking for something more serious. The holidays are coming and they don’t want to be alone; it’s time to settle down. Plus, fall weather is cozy.”

Hiring a wingwoman costs $65 an hour, with a two hour minimum, and is $30 for every half-hour thereafter. Several testimonials on the company’s website attest that it’s worth the price: “My wingwoman focused on making connections and harnessing intuition,” says client Scott Alden. ”The method was to hang out with her, be myself and seize the moment when it was right. Women who saw that I was with her felt more comfortable around me, and I didn’t have to work as hard. I felt comfortable, too.” Michael, a client from Cambridge, writes, “I felt really comfortable after meeting the wingwoman, who introduced me to a couple of very attractive ladies. I have already re-hired her because she was great company and made me very confident.”

There’s no guarantee that a wingwoman will help you find your future wife, of course, but who can argue with at least giving it a try? Besides, you get to be seen with a hot, confident woman by your side instead of your cologne-drenched, awkward-pick-up-line-using best friend.

You’re about to get lucky: Are you covered? The approach of World AIDS Day on Dec. 1 serves as a reminder that carrying–and, of course, using–condoms can be a life saving decision. Fashion designer Maggie Kervick and LifeStyles condoms want to show you that being protected can be fashionable, too.

Kervick and LifeStyles have teamed up for a line of vinyl bags made to look like SKYN condom wrappers, part of the “I’m Covered Campaign.” One dollar from each purchase will benefit Answer, a national sex education organization associated with Rutgers University.

“I’m hoping to break down the stereotype that if a guy has a condom he is considered ‘prepared,’ but if a girl has a condom she is considered a ‘tramp,’” says Kervick. “The bag is a great conversational piece that will relay a message to onlookers about the woman carrying the bag–how she is confident, responsible, and protected. The ‘I’m Covered Campaign’ reinforces the need for self-respect and a proactive approach in regards to protecting oneself from STIs and unwanted pregnancies.”

The bags come in three styles, the Living in SKYN Tote ($55), the Dirty Little SKYN Cosmetics Bags ($25) and the I’m a Slave for SKYN Wristlet ($20). Bonus: Get a free pack of LifeStyles condoms and information on how to use them with each purchase!

Is this Anheuser-Busch's attempt at a "craft" beer?

When beer lovers think of craft beers, certain names come to mind: Redhook, Magic Hat, Smuttynose, Samuel Adams. A name not on the list? Bud Light. But that’s something the beer’s company could be trying to change.

This January, Anheuser-Busch InBev is set to release a new brew, Bud Light Platinum, the company said Wednesday in a statement. The new beer “appeals to a key group of beer drinkers and expands consumer occasions,” the company says, leading some to wonder if this is the company’s attempt to “tap in” to a popular craft beer market. US beer sales were down 1 percent by volume in 2010, but craft beer sales, in dollars, rose 15 percent in the first half of 2011, according to the Brewers Association.

But what makes a “craft” beer? The Brewers Association defines a craft brewer as “small, independent and traditional”–all things Anheuser-Busch InBev, the largest brewer in the world, arguably is not. So is “craft” beer set to be the next ambiguous but trendy label, a la “green” or “natural”? We’ll have to wait and see.

Just in time for Halloween, Tom Byron Pictures and director Lee Roy Myers have released their newest X-rated comedy-horror film, “A Wet Dream on Elm Street.” In the parody of Wes Craven’s slasher classic “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” Freddy (Anthony Rosano), a greedy sex toy dealer, is burned alive by his angry customers who are sick and tired of being overcharged for their dildos. In true Freddy fashion, he comes back and haunts the dreams of Elm Street’s hot and horny residents.

“Horror and sex go together perfectly,” says Myers. “Both get hearts racing, though with different outcomes. Mix in some humor, and we have sexy, scary and hysterical parodies true fans can enjoy.”

The flick, starring Jennifer White, Sophie Dee, Gracie Glam, Charley Chase and Giselle Leon, can be ordered here.

Aveda hairstylists give step-by-step instructions on how to achieve these runway looks

Beautiful hair was everywhere at this year’s New York Fashion Week, and thanks to some of the industry’s top hairstylists, you can create these chic, straight-from-the-runway looks yourself at home. Read on for step-by-step instructions, and you’ll be looking runway-ready in no time!

A modern, youthful twist

Designer: Preen
Hairstylist: Paul Hanlon, lead stylist for Aveda

To complement Preen’s modern yet feminine look, Hanlon says he “wanted the hair to impart the same lightness, innocence and purity. We created a sleek silhouette to mirror the clean lines of the clothes.” The result? Hair that is “pure and neat; it almost has a forties feel,” he adds.

How to do it

1. Prep hair by spritzing throughout with Aveda Volumizing Tonic, then blow dry with a round brush. Work hair away from the face and neck to keep the hairline clean. If hair is dry or damaged, begin by prepping with Aveda Brilliant Damage Control, and follow with Aveda Volumizing Tonic.

2. Once dry, gently brush hair away from the face and let hair part naturally on the left side. Smooth hair with a fine-toothed comb and a light mist of Aveda Air Control Hair Spray.

3. On the right side of the head at the top of the ear, begin to twist hair toward the back of the head, staying just on top of the parietal ridge. Use a tail comb to neatly bring hair up into the roll, and secure the roll with “U” pins. Avoid twisting too tightly at this point.

4. Continue twisting toward the back of the head following the natural hairline. Twist all the way to the nape, secure hairwith a clip.

5. Repeat twist on the left side, starting slightly lower, one to two inches above the top of the ear, sloping downward at the back of the head to create a “U” shape when twists meet at the nape.

6. Neatly brush hair upward from the hairline to create a seamless connection between the two twists. This gives the appearance of a single, smooth, twisted roll that snugly wraps around the head.

7. Use Aveda Air Control Hair Spray and the end of a tail comb to smooth all wisps and flyaways while replacing “U” pins with bobby pins, snugly tucked and hidden.

8. Finish with Aveda Brilliant Spray-On Shine.

Long, loose, effortless waves

Designer: Christian Siriano
Hairstylist: Antoinette Beenders, lead stylist for Aveda

“The hair for Christian Siriano this season is playful and looks effortless,” says Beenders. “We’ve updated the loose, beachy waves of the ’90s with a more groomed look that’s smart, young and approachable. I was inspired by Christian’s muse for this collection: a charming, smart girl who radiates happiness. The hair is super wearable and reflects her flirty, yet clever nature. It’s fun, fresh and modern—just like the collection.”

How to do it

1. Dampen hair at the root with Aveda Volumizing Tonic and blow dry with a large round brush to create natural volume. For added lift, use Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray as a setting lotion while blow-drying by lightly misting the hair.

2. Use a one-and-a-half-inch barrel curling iron to curl one-inch sections of hair away from the face until all hair is curled. Rake with fingers to loosen.

3. Flip hair upside down and gently brush curls through.

4. Flip hair back up. Create a deep side part and gently smooth out the top of hair using a comb, maintaining volume at the part.

5. Spray Aveda Brilliant Spray-On Shine onto a kabuki makeup brush and stroke the brush over hair from roots to ends to give a healthy shine. Keep style in place and protect against humidity with Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray.

Textured and touseled

Designer: Band of Outsiders
Hairstylist: Didier Malige, stylist for Aveda

Malige created two looks for the Band of Outsiders’ show (which was inspired by the dark 1975 Australian film “Picnic at Hanging Rock”), a romantic, “girly” look of textured waves, and a “boyish” look of a touseled chignon. “The hair for both looks at Band of Outsiders is textured, matte and has an easy look, almost undone,” says Malige. “It’s as if she’s done her hair herself, pulling it back into a loose chignon or letting it fall into natural waves.”

How to do it: The “girly” waves

1. Divide dry hair into two sections with a straight middle part.

2. Working with one section at a time, twist each section of hair away from the face while applying Aveda Brilliant Retexturizing Gel.

3. Continue twisting hair and working in the gel until hair is nearly saturated.

4. Holding the twisted section out with your fingertips, use a blowdryer to set hair. Continue blowdrying and twisting until hair is completely dry.

5. Pin the twist to the side of the head, creating a large spiral. Leave for several minutes to set.

6. Repeat on the other side of the head.

7. Once the spirals have set, remove pins so that the twists fall onto each shoulder. Rake hair with your fingers to create waves.

8. For added texture, scrunch Aveda Pure Hair Abundance Potion into waves.

9. Finish with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray.

How to do it: The “boyish” chignon

1. Mist Aveda Air Control Hair Spray throughout hair from roots to ends to texturize the hair and give pliable hold.

2. Gently brush hair through using a brush.

3. Using a wide-toothed comb, backcomb hair from mid-length to ends, leaving the roots untouched. This creates grip and hold on the hair, making it easier to pull back and secure.

4. Twist hair back and create a loose chignon at the occipital bone. Pin into place.

5. Gently backcomb the top layer of hair and the chignon in a feathering motion, creating additional wisps and a slightly “undone” look.

6. Loosen a few wisps of hair around the face for a natural, slightly mussed feeling.

7. Hold style in place with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray.

A wearable, pretty chignon

Designer: Sophie Théallet
Hairstylist: Didier Malige, stylist for Aveda

For Sophie Théallet’s collection, inspired by the 1969 film “La Piscine” (meaning “The swimming pool”), Malige wanted hair that expressed “an understated refinement, an instinctual sensuality.” Malige says that “the hair is that of a girl who has just gone swimming, as if she has offhandedly pulled her hair back in a chignon and just left it to dry. It reflects a nonchalant sensuality, her natural and understated sophistication.”

How to do it

1. Brush hair away from the face with fingers, while working Aveda Pure Abundance Potion throughout to texturize.

2. Pull hair back with hands, gathering at the back of the head as if to pull into a ponytail.

3. Twist hair and coil into a loose bun, fasten with bobby pins.

4. Pat a generous amount of Aveda Men Pure-Formance Grooming Clay and Aveda Control Paste onto the head, massaging and scrunching to create a matte, wet-and-dried texture.

5. Smooth sides very close to head and leave a little volume on top.

Mmm, balls!

For “Saturday Night Live” fans who have always wanted a taste of the famous Schweddy Balls, you’re in luck! Ben & Jerry’s announced yesterday that it has launched its newest limited edition flavor, Schweddy Balls, which is Fair Trade vanilla ice cream with a hint of rum, fudge-covered rum balls and milk chocolate malt balls. Mmm, balls!

Available nationwide, the ice cream honors the classic SNL skit starring Ana Gasteyer and Molly Shannon, who play hosts of the National Public Radio-type show entitled “Delicious Dish,” and their guest Pete Schweddy, played by Alec Baldwin, owner of Season’s Eatings Bakery.

“For a long time, I thought that ‘Here Lies Pete Schweddy’ would end up on my tombstone,” Alec Baldwin said in a press release. “Now, thanks to Ben & Jerry’s, the goodness of the Schweddy family recipe won’t go with me to the great beyond. It is immortalized here, right now, and it’s an ice cream. Ben & Jerry’s and Schweddy. Two great names in American dessert, together at last.”

Former SNL cast member Ana Gasteyer said of the news, “The Schweddy Balls sketch was a personal favorite from my SNL run, so I am pleased as holiday punch that Ben and Jerry’s has taken it upon themselves to share the Schweddy Family recipe with the world. As a person and a performer, I am a sucker for holiday balls. And I have no doubt this ice cream will cause many to scream, ‘Good times.’”

So grab a pint of glistening, creamy Schweddy Balls and watch the premier of SNL’s 37th season on Sept. 24 at 11:30 p.m. We bet your mouth is already watering at the thought of those balls!

Aveda's global makeup artist shares tips on how to rock gem-colored hues

Ladies, it’s time to update your makeup stash! This fall and winter, have fun with rich, vivid jewel tones that add warmth to winter skin and chicness to your fall and winter style.

On Sept. 1, Aveda will introduce its limited edition Jewels of the Earth makeup collection, a combination of gem-inspired eyeshadow and lip color hues that complement every skin tone and hair color, and can be used to create dramatic or subtle yet stunning looks.

“Jewels of the Earth is a palette of rich, intense tones,” says Janell Geason, Aveda’s global makeup artist. “Metallic, velvety-dark colors reflect depth and nocturnal elegance. The looks suggest a somber, antique and artistic mood, and the notion of old becoming new.”

The collection includes six Petal Essence Single Eye Colors (available in Crushed Citrine, Terraverte, Sanidine, Azurite, Amethyst and Jade), which are are crease-resistant, lightweight and long-lasting and boast a silky, petal-soft texture for effortless blending thanks to jasmine and geranium waxes; one Nourish-Mint Sheer Mineral Lip Color (available in Sheer Petalite), made with plant and fruit waxes to smooth fine lines, plump lips and add moisture, and has mineral-derived pigments for a flattering touch of color; and two Nourish-Mint Smoothing Lip Colors (available in Tanzanite and Vanadinite), a creamy lipstick that gives lips full-coverage color for a va-va-voom look.

If rich makeup colors intimidate you, relax! Blast spoke with Geason, who shared her expert tips on how to recreate some of this fall and winter’s standout looks from the collection—step by step!

Blast: Which of the colors from the collection do you recommend for light, medium and dark skin tones?

Janell Geason: All the colors of Jewels of the Earth can be used on all skin tones; the key is application. Just as gemstones are classified as transparent, translucent and opaque, these same effects can be achieved with makeup, therefore making all colors wearable for all skin tones.

Blast: What about for each eye color?

JG: It depends on what you want to achieve. You can create an interesting contrast to your hair color or eye color. For example, if you have a vibrant red or violet toned hair color, choose rich emerald tones to create a pop; Jade works beautifully for this. Or use your eye color as a guide to create tonal dissonance. For example, green eyes with gold flecks look beautiful in amethyst tones, blue eyes shine with warm, rich copper tones, and brown eyes have it all depending on what flecks of color you want to bring out.

Blast: Since jewel tones are rich, how can they be “toned down” for an easy daytime look?

JG: For a more subtle look, use a pop of color on the top lash line above or in place of your eyeliner. Amethyst, Azurite or Jade are great options for this look. Use the colors as an accessory, which means doing your makeup like you normally do and add a touch of jewel tones to it.

Blast: Any tips on how to make a smokey eye using the collection’s colors instead of the classic black?

JG: Begin by smudging an eyeliner all around your eye. I prefer Aveda’s Black Orchid Eye Definer. Then choose your favorite jewel-toned shade–I love Amethyst, Jade or Azurite for this–and apply with a Medium Eye Color Brush. Apply from your lash line to slightly above the crease. Blend outer edges well. Then go back with a lighter shade –I love Sanidine for a touch of gold–and apply slightly above the first color and accent the inner corner of the lid for added glam. I suggest doing the top lid first to avoid the “panda eye.” Once you finish the top lid, you’ll easily be able to see how heavy you need to go on the bottom lash line. Finish the bottom lash line with the same jewel-toned shade you used on the top, and remember to blend well. Curl lashes and apply Aveda’s Black Forest Mosscara to top and bottom lashes. This smokey eye is my favorite for an evening out.

Blast: What is your favorite daytime look?

JG: For day, a strong red lip paired with a neutral eye creates a polished look. On the eyes, a sweep of Terraverte Eye Color from the lash line to slightly above the contour of the eye, with Sanidine diffused lightly at the inner corner of the eye, does the trick. Finish with Aveda’s Black Forest Mosscara on the lashes and Vanadinite Lip Color for a pretty pout.

So there you have it; now there’s no excuse for ho-hum makeup this fall and winter. Do to your face what a sparkling bauble does for your outfit and brighten it up with gorgeous jewels!

Company accused of religious discrimination

A Muslim woman who was fired from a Hollister clothing store for refusing to remove her religious headscarf, or hijab, filed a lawsuit Monday against her former employer, Abercrombie & Fitch.

Hani Khan, 20, of San Mateo, Calif., had worked at the store for four months before she was fired in February 2010. She had been told that wearing her hijab would be permitted, and would not conflict with the company “look policy,” if the scarf were in the company colors. But in February, company managers asked her to remove the hijab while she worked. When she refused, she was fired.

“When I was asked to remove my scarf after being hired with it on, I was demoralized and felt unwanted,” said Khan. “Growing up in this country where the Bill of Rights guarantees freedom of religion, I have felt let down.”

After being fired, Khan filed a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which determined that Khan had been wrongfully fired.

Khan filed the suit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, citing religious discrimination and asserting that Hollister’s parent company, Abercrombie & Fitch, did not comply with the Civil Rights Act of 1964 or with the California Fair Employment and Housing Act. Khan is seeking to make it mandatory for Abercrombie & Fitch to allow employees to wear religious scarves, along with unspecified damages. The EEOC has also filed a lawsuit, coming after attempts at a settlement between the parties earlier this year failed.

Zahra Billoo, executive director of the San Francisco Bay Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, one of the parties representing Khan, said, “When we first received Ms. Khan’s complaint, it was the explicitness of Abercrombie & Fitch’s discriminatory demands which concerned us. They were both egregious and illegal. For an employer to, point-blank, require an employee to relinquish their religious practice is a violation of our cherished civil rights laws.”

Araceli Martinez-Olguin, an attorney with the Legal Aid Society-Employment Law Center, which is also representing Khan, said, ”Abercrombie & Fitch cannot hide behind a ‘Look Policy’ to justify violating Ms. Khan’s civil rights. Their refusal to accommodate her wearing her hijab is not only unlawful, but un-American.”

In a statement made to the Associated Press, Abercrombie & Fitch stood by its diversity, saying that diversity in its stores “far exceeds the diversity in the population of the United States.”

“We comply with the law regarding reasonable religious accommodation, and we will continue to do so,” said Rocky Robbins, Abercrombie & Fitch’s general counsel. “We are confident that when this matter is tried, a jury will find that we have fully complied with the law.”

Nothing in the store is over $260!

Fashionistas on a budget have a new reason to update their wardrobes this summer. Andover’s First Date Boutique has moved to a new, larger space downtown–and still has chic clothes at affordable prices. Whether you’re searching for that cute and casual summer dress or that sexy stunner for a party, First Date has it all, and most of it’s priced at under $100. Nothing in the store is over $260, so even that fancy prom dress won’t break the bank.

First Date, owned by sisters Brianne and Keri Barrett since 2007, is a sophisticated girly-girl’s haven with the goal of answering the question, “What am I going to wear?” in an easy, affordable way. Frustrated with having to go from shop to shop trying to piece fun, flirty and unique outfits together, the sisters came up with the idea of a one-stop-shop where women can find everything they need for a trip, party or event. The sisters wanted to create a boutique where women could “enjoy a shopping experience that enabled them to find an outfit that guaranteed a multitude of compliments.”

First Date displays its merchandise from brands such as Max and Cleo, Hanky Panky and Alexia Admor by themed sections, displaying a mix of dresses, tops, skirts, jeans, jewelry, accessories, undergarments and gifts: Soirée, which features semi-formal and formal options, is where you’ll find that elegant dress for your work’s holiday party or for that super fancy wedding; Just Cocktails has what you need when you’re craving a new look for a girls’ night on the town; Getaway is where you’ll find the perfect flowy maxi dress and that sexy new bikini for your summer vacation or stay at the beach; and Hitched is the section for gals who are (you guessed it!) getting hitched or have a friend who is, and offers the perfect pretty outfits for bridal showers and engagement parties, along with cute “I do” accessories for the bride-to-be.

Inside the shop’s pink-walled dressing rooms, notes on the mirrors remind shoppers that “First impressions are everything,” boost their confidence that “He’ll love that!” and exclaim what savvy First Date shoppers already know: “You are one stylish gal.”

Cambridge-based personal trainer gives advice on easy ways to sneak exercise into your day

It might feel nice to kick up your feet and unwind by watching TV after work or to relax by the pool all day, but a sedentary lifestyle can be just as bad for your health as smoking, according to recent research.

Dr. David Coven, a cardiologist at New York’s St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, told CBS.com San Francisco earlier this month that “Smoking certainly is a major cardiovascular risk factor and sitting can be equivalent in many cases.” Coven added that according to several new studies, a sedentary lifestyle is linked to the increased risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, cancer and premature death.

According to exercise science expert Steven Blair, as quoted in Science Daily, as many as 50 million Americans live a sedentary lifestyle. Not surprisingly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that more than two-thirds of Americans are overweight and a third are obese.

Callie Durbrow, a personal trainer at Durbrow Performance Training in Cambridge, Mass., says, “It’s all an unfortunate chain of events: sedentary lifestyle leads to obesity, which, in turn, is a well known factor in heart disease, diabetes, and some types of cancer.” She adds that not getting enough exercise is a “recipe for disaster.”

So what can you do to get active if your day revolves around sitting at a desk at work and sitting in the car during your commute? Sneak “mini-workouts” in, says Durbrow. Durbrow recommends getting at least 30 minutes of “moderately intensive” physical activity five days a week.

“Finding time to exercise–maybe before or after work or during the lunch hour–can literally be a real life saver,” she says.

Here’s what you can do:

Take the stairs, and make this mini-workout session even more effective by running up and down instead of walking. “If you do it several times a day, every day, it’ll add up,” says Durbrow.

Get out and walk briskly, enough to get your heart rate up, instead of driving short distances.

Try to use your free time for exercise instead of watching TV or surfing the Web. “If you finally have a bit of free time, use it for some form of physical activity, not to sit around some more,” she says.

The FDA announced yesterday that effective next year the labels of sunscreen products will contain new information to better inform consumers of sunscreen products’ levels of protection and ability to reduce the risk of skin cancer, early skin aging and sunburn.

Sunscreen products approved by the FDA for protection against both UVA and UVB rays can now be labeled as “Broad Spectrum.” Under the new labeling, says the FDA, “sunscreens labeled as both Broad Spectrum and SPF 15 (or higher), if used regularly, as directed, and in combination with other sun protection measures will help prevent sunburn, reduce the risk of skin cancer, and reduce the risk of early skin aging.”

Products that have an SPF between two and 14 may be labeled as “Broad Spectrum” if they pass FDA testing, but only sunscreens that are SPF 15 or higher can state on their labels that they reduce the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging when used as directed. Sunscreens that are not “Broad Spectrum” or that are “Broad Spectrum” but have an SPF between two and 14 will now be required to display warning labels that read the following: “Skin Cancer/Skin Aging Alert: Spending time in the sun increases your risk of skin cancer and early skin aging. This product has been shown only to help prevent sunburn, not skin cancer or early skin aging.”

Additionally, manufacturers can no longer claim that sunscreens are “waterproof” or “sweatproof,” nor can they identify their products as “sunblock.” Manufacturers that claim their products are “water resistant” must include on the front label that consumers can expect the stated level of SPF while swimming or sweating for either 40 or 80 minutes. Claims of “instant” or “immediate” protection or claims of protection for more than two hours without reapplication will no longer be permitted unless approved by the FDA.

Janet Woodcock, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in a statement, “The FDA has evaluated the data and developed testing and labeling requirements for sunscreen products so that manufacturers can modernize their product information and consumers can be well informed on which products offer the greatest benefit. These changes to sunscreen labels are an important part of helping consumers have the information they need so they can choose the right sun protection for themselves and their families.”

Woodcock says that for the best sun protection, consumers should regularly wear “Broad Spectrum” sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher and be sure to reapply. Consumers are also encouraged by the FDA to limit sun exposure especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., to wear clothing to cover exposed skin in the sun and to reapply sunscreen at least every two hours.

The FDA released three additional regulatory documents, one of which, a Proposed Rule, would limit the maximum SPF on sunscreen labels to be “50+,” as there are insufficient data demonstrating that SPF values above 50 provide an increase in protection. An Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for Dosage Forms will address the effectiveness and safety of sunscreen sprays and address sunscreen dosages. The third document, the Draft Enforcement Guidance for Industry, will aid manufacturers in understanding how to label and test their products.

The FDA is also reexamining the safety of sunscreens’ active ingredients.

This Father’s Day, leave the fishing rods and bottles of Scotch to the amateurs and take your dad out to a Red Sox game or give him a session of man-pampering and a massage at the Langham Boston’s Chuan Body + Soul spa and fitness center (he can tell the guys he went fishing if his manliness comes into question, but his relaxed muscles will thank you).

The Langham is offering two overnight packages this baseball season, Take Me out to the Ballgame and Cheer from the Bleachers, both awesome gifts for your sports-fanatic dad. The Take Me out to the Ballgame package includes two tickets to the game within the first 20 rows of Fenway’s right field with rates starting from $455. The Cheer from the Bleachers package gets you two tickets to the game within the first 20 rows of Fenway’s center field bleachers, with rates starting from $385.

Both packages also include overnight accommodations at the Langham and the use of the hotel’s fitness facilities and indoor pool at Chuan Body + Soul.

These packages are available until September 21. For more information, call 1-800-791-7761 or go to www.Boston.LanghamHotels.com.

While you’re at Chuan Body + Soul, why not take advantage of the Father’s Day special? The 75-minute A Man’s World treatment includes a back exfoliation, a relaxing massage and a facial. The treatment is $150 throughout the month of June, a $25 savings from the regular price. Bonus? After the treatment, your rejuvenated dad can relax by the pool and sip a free beer!

On gorgeous summer days, it seems as if everyone heads to restaurant patios and decks for lunch. Yes, it’s nice to be outside, but do you really want to wait forever for a cramped table? The Beacon Hill Hotel and Bistro has a romantic, old fashioned and chic solution: a picnic.

Choose items from the following menu for your picnic in the park:

Tea-cured gravlax, herbed potato salad, green beans and baby greens, $13

Frisée salad with blue cheese, apples, bacon and walnuts, $9

Mediterranean grilled chicken salad with tomato, feta and green olives, $10

Lentil and farro burger, baby spinach, spiced yogurt and red pepper salad, $12

Steak salad with organic romaine, walnuts, blue cheese, tomatoes and red wine vinaigrette, $18

Police find heroin, crack cocaine inside jeans pocket

Boston Police acquired more evidence against an alleged drug dealer after his mother inadvertently gave it to them.

Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said in a statement that after police arrested Travis Curry, 25, in his Tremont Street apartment building on Feb. 9 for a narcotics transaction with an undercover officer, officers asked Curry’s mother if she’d like to get some warmer clothes for Curry to wear. He was wearing shorts. Curry’s mother agreed and retrieved a sweatshirt and a pair of jeans from inside the apartment, where she handed the clothes to an officer. The officer felt a “hard object” inside the jeans, and upon inspection found a large folding knife, nine bags of crack cocaine and 15 bags of heroin.

Curry was arraigned yesterday in Suffolk Superior Court following his April 20 indictment on charges of distribution of a Class A substance, possession with intent to distribute Class A and Class B substances and violating the state’s drug laws within 1,000 feet of a school. Curry faces enhanced sentences as a second or subsequent drug offender.

Curry is being held on $2,000 cash bail and is ordered to stay away from Madison Park High School property, where Curry allegedly met the undercover officer prior to their encounter at the Tremont Street apartment building. He will return to court on June 20.

Man harassed minor via Facebook

A Fremont, Calif., man was sentenced Wednesday to four years in prison and was fined $20,000 for possessing child pornography and attempting to extort additional child pornography images from a minor, according to an announcement made by Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer of the Criminal Division and U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag for the Northern District of California.

James Dale Brown, 28, harrassed the 14-year-old girl via Facebook using the username “Bob Lewis” from December 2008 through April 2009. He was aware of the victim’s age. Prior to contacting the victim, he had obtained a “revealing” photograph of her and told her that he would delete this picture, along with others he claimed to have of her, “from the Internet” only if she sent him a video of herself engaging in sexually explicit conduct.

Brown threatened to expose said images to the victim’s friends, also minors. The victim did not give in to Brown’s threats, and on April 18, 2009, Brown sent one of the victim’s friends, a minor, two Web links to an explicit image of the victim.

On April 23, 2009, FBI agents executed a search warrant on Brown’s residence. Brown was arrested on Aug. 26, 2010 and pleaded guilty on Feb. 2, 2011.

This case was part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. This is the first case involving the attempted extortion of a minor for child pornography via a social networking website to be prosecuted in the Northern District of California.

Whether you’re sick of hearing about Prince William and Kate Middleton’s upcoming nuptials or you’re brimming with excitement about watching the fairy tale unfold, the royal wedding celebration is a bloody brilliant excuse to have a drink!

What better way to celebrate or sneer at the obsession with the future king and queen than with a refreshing Pimm’s Cup cocktail? Pimm’s, a gin-based spirit flavored with liqueurs, fruits and spices, has an official Royal Warrant of Appointment from the queen herself as Distillers and Compounders to Her Majesty. Fancy!

Pimm’s Cup

8 oz. Pimm’s No. 1

24 oz. chilled lemon-lime soda

Add mint, cucumber, orange and strawberry.

Mix in a pitcher (call it a “jug” if you want to impress the queen) filled with ice.

Serves 8. Cheers!

Goodnight Media is about to release their newest porn parody, “Katy Pervy — The XXX Parody of Katy Perry,” poking fun at the blue wig-wearing “Teenage Dream” sensation and at many of your other favorite chart-toppers, including Ke$ha (kA$$ha), Rihanna (Rihandjob), Lady Gaga (Lady Gagger) and Snoop Dog (Snoop Dong). In the film, Katy Pervy gets down and dirty with a red, fuzzy puppet who looks like a ratty version of Elmo. He’s no Russell Brand (Russell Gland), but he sure gives Katy some fireworks and makes her go “Oh, oh, oh!”

Director Lee Roy Myers said of the parody, “Hey, if I didn’t go there with ‘Katy Pervy — The XXX Parody,’ then how would you know what might go on behind closed dressing room doors? Your favorite stars are having filthy, perverted, raunchy, ridiculous sex.”

The video, which stars Kimberly Kane, Lexi Swallow and Misty Stone, is available for pre-sale now and will be released on April 26.

Buying this lavender-scented candle is just one of the ways you can help

Next time you suds up, shave and relax in the tub, remember this: Taking just one bath uses, on average, over 40 gallons of water, while many people in the world have access to fewer than eight gallons of water a day. Nearly 900 million people around the world struggle to obtain clean water, and over 3.5 million people die each year from water-related diseases, according to Water.org. But despite the grim statistics, there is hope. This month, Aveda celebrates its 12th Earth Month Campaign in the effort to raise $4 million to bring clean water to those who need it. The best part? You can help!

Aveda, known for its high-end skincare, haircare and makeup products made with plant-based, organic ingredients, has raised over $18 million for environmental organizations since 1999.

“Environmentalism and social activism are Aveda’s heritage; they are part of our culture, they are in our DNA,” said Katie Galloway, Aveda’s Earth Fund manager. “We believe it is our responsibility to care for the world and communities where we do business.”

This year, all of the money raised by the Earth Month Campaign will go to the Global Greengrants Fund, which gives grants to grassroots organizations working to provide clean water to impoverished communities around the world.

“Water is a fundamental human right and a global issue,” said Galloway. “Whether pollution or scarcity, this is a problem in everyone’s back yard.” Galloway continues, “We all have a role to play in preserving biodiversity and protecting the health of the planet for future generations. It’s a question of sustainability; we cannot continue to ignore environmental degradation without understanding its detriment to all life forms —plants, animals and humans.”

How you can make a difference

Relax with aromatherapy. One hundred percent of the purchase price ($12) of Aveda’s soy Light The Way Earth Month Candles will be donated to the campaign. The limited-edition candle is scented with 100 percent certified organic lavender, lavandin and clary sage essential oils and is packaged with recycled materials.

Go for a walk. During the week of April 22, join the Walk for Water event at participating salons and spas. Raise awareness by walking 3.7 miles, the average distance women in developing countries must walk in order to collect water every day.

Get your hair done. Make an appointment at a participating salon or spa and a portion of the service fee will be donated to the campaign. If you use Foursquare or Facebook to check in at that location, Aveda will donate $1.

Go shopping. Shop at Aveda.com and donate $1 at check-out to support organizations working to improve water quality for disaster victims in Japan.

Hilton, dubbed a “bully” by some of his celebrity targets, has paired up with illustrator Jen Hill in his book, “The Boy with Pink Hair,” to be published in September 2011 by Celebra Children’s Books.

“I am so proud of ‘The Boy with Pink Hair,’ its important message and the creativity and the passion of the author delivering it–Perez Hilton,” said Raymond Garcia, publisher of Celebra Children’s Books, in a statement. “‘The Boy with Pink Hair’ is a defining story about how believing in yourself and following your aspirations can not only bring out the best in you, but also in those around you. With fun, colorful and endearing characters, Perez reminds readers that by simply accepting our differences we can find the things that unite us all.”

Perez Hilton at Logo's "NewNowNext" Awards in LA in 2010 (Media credit/J. Strauss, Wire Image)

The book tells the story of a boy born with (you guessed it) pink hair, who isn’t accepted by his peers because of his cotton candy-colored ‘do. He discovers what makes him special and other sugary things like that–a far cry from the content of Hilton’s own popular blog in which penises are drawn on people’s faces and dots of “coke” go up their noses.

Hilton, real name Mario Armando Lavandeira, Jr., said in a statement, “I am absolutely elated about this book, which comes from a very dear and genuine place within me. While I can identify in many ways with The Boy with Pink Hair, he represents so much more. This story is about every kid that’s ever had a dream, felt excluded, wanted to belong, and hoped that one day they could do what they loved and make a difference. Today, with this book, that’s exactly what I feel I have the opportunity to do. I hope everyone can share in the spirit of a boy that only wants to bring some happiness to the world around him.”

BBB also saw increase in consumer searches for Business Reviews

An annual report released by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) yesterday revealed that consumers filed 1.1 million complaints against North American businesses in 2010, a 10 percent increase from the number of complaints filed in 2009. Additionally, consumers used the BBB’s website to research North American businesses more than 87 million times last year, up 37 percent from 2009.

“The complaints filed with BBB are not only a barometer of customer satisfaction, but the rise in complaints also shows that consumers are increasingly relying on BBB for assistance in resolving disputes with businesses,” said Stephen A. Cox, president and CEO of the Council of Better Business Bureaus, in a statement.

The BBB offers consumers 3 million Business Reviews, which report businesses’ accreditation status, letter grade and complaint history. Roofing contractors, general contractors and mortgage brokers were the most frequently researched industries in 2010. Out of 4,483 industries represented, the largest number of complaints were directed to the cable and satellite TV industry, with 30,985 complaints in 2010, down five percent from 2009. Complaints filed in this industry were resolved 98.6 percent of the time last year, a slight increase from the year before. The cable and satellite TV industry’s resolution rate is above the overall average resolution rate across all industries, which was 78 percent in 2010.

The second highest complained-about industry in 2010 was the cell phone industry with 27,293 complaints, a 29.6 percent decrease from 2009. Ranking third on the list are new car auto dealers with 24,698 complaints last year, an 8.1 percent decrease from the year before. These two industries, like the cable and satellite TV industry, also beat the average number of resolved complaints, with the cell phone industry resolving 92.1 percent of complaints and new car auto dealers resolving 87.4 percent of complaints.

“Industries that do a large volume of business are naturally going to have a larger number of complaints,” said Cox. “This is why it’s important to look at how a company responded when BBB approached them with consumer complaints, and not just the sheer number of complaints.”

The free services and tools offered on the BBB website are especially valuable for consumers in this tough economy, said Cox, adding, “Given the current economic climate, consumers need to be more cautious on where and how they spend their money and a fast, easy way to do this is to ensure businesses are accredited by BBB and have a good BBB rating before doing business with them.”

To celebrate its 75th anniversary, Goya Foods donated 75,000 pounds of food to 10 Greater Boston food pantries earlier this month, providing enough food to feed 60,000 needy families.

Goya’s donations to local food banks in Boston, Chelsea, Lawrence, Lowell, Lynn and Quincy on March 16 were part of a larger initiative, the Goya Gives campaign, in which Goya and the United Way donated one million pounds of food across the nation, enough to feed three million people. The company’s philanthropy also extended to other parts of the world, with the donation of 75,000 pounds of food sent to troops serving overseas and 100,000 cans of coconut water sent to victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Robert Unanue, president of Goya Foods, said, “Giving has always been an integral part of our culture, so as we celebrate our 75th anniversary, we wanted to give back to the communities that have always supported us. At a time when millions of Americans are facing food insecurity, this donation reinforces our commitment to aiding in the fight against hunger, so we thank United Way for helping us execute this day of giving.”

At Roxbury’s Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, student volunteers from the Boston area took part in an “alternative spring break,” helping Goya and United Way unload, sort and distribute the donated food to pantries.

Hilary Swank wore her hair in a romantic bun at the 2011 Academy Awards. (Media Credit/Granitz, WireImage)

We’ve got spring/summer 2011’s hottest hairstyles straight from the runways of New York Fashion Week. This year, Sonya Metzler, creative director at Vim Fitness Spa and Salon in Cambridge, Mass., joined Aveda’s styling team backstage. Metzler shares her top three hair trends with Blast and gives us tips on how to achieve them.

Buns and knots

With the success of “Black Swan,” it’s no surprise that buns and knots made the list. Besides these updos’ homage to Natalie Portman’s character Nina, these ballet-inspired hairdos are perfect for the warmer weather. “This look beats the heat and humidity, keeping you cool and looking elegant,” says Metzler.

Where she saw it: Christian Siriano, Sophie Theallet and Jason Wu

Where we’ve seen it: At the 2011 Academy Awards, Sandra Bullock and Hilary Swank both wore buns.

How to do it: Pull hair into a ponytail either high on the head or at the nape of your neck. Secure hair with an elastic and twist into a bun, fastening with bobby pins. Hold the look in place with Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray. “For a truly up-to-the-moment look, add texture and interest with twists, braids and micro-crimping,” adds Metzler.

Smooth curls, like these at ORGANIC by John Patrick, are sexy and flirty. (Media Credit/Jon Gurinsky)

Smooth and soft curls

There’s something naturally feminine about soft, loose curls, and this hairstyle is perfect to go along with flirty, flowy spring and summer dresses. “This is a style that moves beautifully and works well for both day and evening,” says Metzler.

Where she saw it: ORGANIC by John Patrick

Where we’ve seen it: Celine Dion and Amy Adams sported this look at this year’s Academy Awards.

How to do it: Prep damp hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother to prevent flyaways and with Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam for volume and texture. Part hair wherever you wish and blow dry hair with a round brush for extra volume and shine. Use a one-inch curling iron to make waves, working in sections from bottom to top. Rake through with fingers or a wide-tooth comb and finish with a light mist of Aveda Air Control Hair Spray.

Natural texture

Natural texture, seen here at Rodarte, is playful. (Media Credit/Jon Gurinsky)

Rodarte’s “young and innocent coif” was a standout at this year’s Fashion Week. “It has a playful and organic feel,” says Metzler. “The swooping side part is a little bit retro, and the barrette you choose infuses the style with your personality.”

Where she saw it: Rodarte

Where we’ve seen it: Scarlett Johansson, Florence Welch and Michelle Williams chose natural-textured hair at the Academy Awards.

How to do it: Blow dry your hair straight, using your fingers instead of a brush to achieve more texture. Create an imperfect part on the left side of your head. Rub a nickel-sized dollop of Aveda’s Light Elements Texturizing Crème in your hands. Tousle and scrunch your hair to create texture and body. Finish with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray. To add more personality to the look, secure a thick barrette to the left side, just above your ear.

Boston restaurant community comes to aid of chef's mother

This winter’s snowy and icy weather may be a cold and slippery inconvenience for some, but for Jodie Gilson, owner of J. Gilson Greenhouses in Groton, Mass., it meant the loss of her business, a wholesale herbs and perennials company. Her greenhouses were destroyed on Feb. 3 by the weight of the snow just as Mother’s Day, a busy time of year for the wholesale plant business, is approaching. Even worse, her insurance would not cover the loss.

But in Gilson’s time of need, the Boston restaurant community came to her rescue. Gilson’s son, award-winning chef and restaurateur Will Gilson of Garden at the Cellar, reached out to his friends and colleagues.

“The response was overwhelming,” said Will. “So many great folks were offering whatever I needed towards an effort that hadn’t even been conceived yet. It’s truly humbling to be a part of this generous community.”

One member of the community who reached out was Brehon Garcia-Dale, the food and wine program manager of the Boston Center for Adult Education (BCAE). Thanks to Garcia-Dale’s interest in helping Gilson’s business, Will found the perfect spot to hold a pop-up restaurant-style benefit for his mother: the BCAE.

“As soon as we learned about the benefit we knew it was something we wanted to become involved with and immediately offered our space for the event,” said Garcia-Dale. “Our facility here is large enough to make an impact, we have state-of-the-art kitchens for the chefs to use, and it just made sense. And more importantly, it’s what we do here. The Boston restaurant community is part of the DNA that makes up our program, and if we can help, we’re going to.”

The Mother’s Day in March event, all proceeds from which will go to J. Gilson Greenhouses, will bring together some of Boston’s finest chefs to create a family-style menu featuring some of their mothers’ favorite dishes.

“It all just clicked,” said Will, “and we thought we could pull together a great event that would be meaningful for the cause and that would offer a unique dining opportunity for those in attendance.”

Fire occurred Friday morning, leaving one dead

The improper use and disposal of smoking materials has been named the cause of Friday morning’s fatal fire in Ipswich, officials said. The Central Street fire took the life of one woman whose name has not yet been released.

“Even though fire deaths are generally decreasing, this has been a difficult winter,” State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan said in a statement. “Smoking remains the leading cause of fire deaths in the state.”

Ipswich Fire Chief Arthur Howe III said in a statement, “This fire is a terrible tragedy and our hearts go out to the victim’s family and friends. The fact that the fire sprinkler system was able to control the fire until firefighters arrived prevented anyone else from being hurt and kept property damage to an absolute minimum.”

Fire officials recommend taking the following precautions in order to prevent a smoking-related fire:

Smoke outside of the home.

Use a sturdy ashtray or a can filled with sand to collect ashes.

Ashtrays should be set on a sturdy surface that is hard to ignite, such as a table.

Make sure cigarettes are completely stubbed out in the ashtray.

Soak cigarette butts and ashes in water before throwing them away.

Never toss hot cigarette butts or ashes in the trash.

Do not put ashtrays on chairs or sofas, which can quickly catch on fire.

Bridal expert shares her favorite trends

Hoffman recommends gowns made of heavier fabrics, such as this Justina McCaffrey silk satin gown.

When we think of weddings, we often picture warm weather and spring flowers. Winter weddings, however, are growing in popularity, says Kimberly Hoffman, bridal expert and owner of the online bridal boutique Your Dream Dress. Breaking from tradition and opting for a wedding during the colder months may seem daunting — How can you elegantly cover up to stay warm? What gowns are appropriate for the season? — but Hoffman is here to help. Here’s what to look for when choosing a gown for your winter wonderland wedding.

Heavier fabrics

Not only are they warmer, but heavier, richer fabrics, such as silk satin and silk Mikado, are appropriate for the winter season. Popular dress styles in these fabrics are ball gowns and trumpet mermaids. Cashmere wraps are also great ways to stay warm and look stylish and sophisticated.

Stay warm and look sophisticated with a bolero jacket like this Justina McCaffrey one made with Chantilly lace.

Bolero jackets and wraps

Long-sleeved dresses are prime for seasonal appropriateness and also will keep you warm, but Hoffman recommends that brides opting for a strapless dress cover up with a bolero jacket or a cashmere wrap. Hoffman especially likes the sophistication and luxury of an Alencon lace or Chantilly lace bolero.

Beadwork and embellishments

A wedding dress with beading will complement the winter landscape. “The crystals will sparkle against the glistening snow and the evening candlelight,” Hoffman says.

Color

Blush pink and ice blue gowns are growing in popularity, says Hoffman, as they are unique, elegant and glamorous. Brides in these colors will stand out from the white of winter. Hoffman recommends that brides with fair skin “Look for a subtle, soft blush gown that will bring warmth to a lighter skin tone, especially in the winter months.”

The beading on this Reem Acra silk tulle and silk satin gown complements the sparkling snow.

A blush pink gown, such as this one by Monique Lhuillier, is a glamorous alternative to a traditional white dress.

Advice on finding and maintaining happy relationships from bestselling author Richard Templar

Whether you’re still searching for The One or you think you’ve found him or her, it’s probably time to read “The Rules of Love” by Richard Templar. Why? Because life is not a chick flick, and relationships can be difficult! Maybe his nagging mom doesn’t think you’re “good enough,” maybe his obsession with video games makes you want to throw his Wii out the window, or maybe your stressful work life has made your sex life fizzle. No matter your romance status, Templar’s book of 100 rules of love can help you strengthen all of your relationships (yes, there is hope for you and his mom) and could even help you find The One.

A few of Templar’s rules for finding love

Be yourself.

Certain people are off limits (you know who they are).

You can’t change people.

Don’t play games.

You can’t make someone love you.

Don’t tar new partners with old brushes.

Relationships aren’t about sex.

You’ll know them when you meet them.

A few of Templar’s rules for relationships

Every problem is a shared problem.

Put each other first.

Be nice.

Your partner is more important than your kids.

Make time for romance.

Treat your partner better than your best friend.

Accept the differences; embrace what you have in common.

Once an argument is over, let it lie.

Templar is the author of the bestselling Rules series, including “The Rules of Life,” “The Rules of Work” and “The Rules of Money.” To purchase or get more information about “The Rules of Love,” go here.
