John Guilfoil's father urges you to remember.

I attended a preseason football game at Gillette Stadium on September 3 — the Pats and the Giants. I was inspired by the halftime event where members of the Massachusetts National Guard took their Oath of re-enlistment on the field. All of these brave men and women have already served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and were volunteering to return. They didn’t forget.

I was proud and stood to clap. Sadly, I looked around and noticed very few fans were even paying attention.

John Guilfoil Jr. (left) the father of Blast's editor, is a career fire fighter who was in New York after 9/11 as part of the rescue efforts

Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless To USA” was playing and no one seemed moved.

I know it was just a preseason game and all, but I felt a little ashamed. These young men and women were reenlisting to go back into harms’ way to combat terrorism and no one seemed to care.

September 11, 2001 seems a long way off eight years later.

There are so few tributes anymore. People seem to want to forget. Blast keeps the tribute alive every year. Take a moment and look at the article and pictures.

I am a firefighter in Connecticut. I went to New York that evening — to ground zero to help. The sights, sounds and smells of that day are etched in my mind. I will never forget the determination of the firefighters, police officers, the iron-workers and construction workers on the “pile.” All just hoping to rescue someone.

When I was handed “The 10 Minute Coach,” I thought, oh my god, another self help book.

But I must say that I was pleasantly surprised.

This book is 154 pages long. I am impressed by all the information that Dan Lier was able to assemble properly into such a short book.

It’s a must read to anyone who has already read the longer books by Tony Robbins, Brian Tracy, Denis Waitley and Og Mandino. Lier quotes these industry leaders as well as others throughout the book.

What I found enjoyable was the way Lier brought all these guys into a short synopsis of their writings and just condensed and explained their principles into a quick and easy to read guide. “The 10 Minute Coach” is a reference guide that you can go back to from time to time just to re-enforce a practice or principle when you need to.

This book is also good for someone who has never read a self-help book for fear of being overwhelmed. Lier writes in an easy to read format, taking the fear out reading these types of books.

You’re not going to find a ton of new and breaking information o the pages of “The 10 Minute Coach.” Instead, this is a new way of presenting the information. The book is a quick, painless read. Lier did not spend too much time belaboring any one point. He gives the most important highlights so that anyone, an average person or a business manager, could go back and review any specific topic and get the gist of the idea to re-affirm a point.

I look forward to reading other books by Dan Lier.”The 10 Minute Coach” gets the point across and is a great introduction to business-style self-help.
