An 82-year-old Dorchester woman was killed Tuesday morning when she fell riding an escalator upward at the State Street MBTA station, police said. Helen Jackson was leaving the station at about 10 a.m. when she fell and her clothing got caught at the top of the escalator, officials said.

According to officials, people at the station pressed the emergency stop button to halt the escalator. Emergency medical technicians cut her clothing from the escalator track, and she was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital but was pronounced dead of her injuries.

“There may have been a medical condition prior to her fall on the escalator,” MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo told The Boston GLobe. He said the cause of death hadn’t been determined.

State Police assigned to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office are investigating the incident.
