MIAMI — For Pembroke Pines couple, Connie Barron and Jay Garcia, Friday brought about a surprising disaster. Sailing along They were aboard the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia when the vessel ran aground after hitting a rock, according to WSVN.

Local 10 reports that Garcia noted the first signs of disaster occurred when lights began flickering. After looking to the crew for help, but receiving contradictory instructions on what to do, the couple realized the ship was listing and they must take action. “They were lying, they kept saying go to your cabin and close the door” said Barron.

Upon landing at the Miami International Airport Monday with only the sheer appreciation of life, the couple was welcomed by family with hugs and kisses. “I’m so lucky to be alive and to be with them,” said Barron.

“There’s clear negligence here. There’s going to be legal claims (coming) out of this incident,” Brett Rivkind, a Miami attorney, told NBC 6 Miami.
