The government requested an extension on the discovery period in the James J. “Whitey” Bulger trial on Friday due to the sheer volume of material.

The court was asked to extend the deadline to August 31 in order for the government to produce the proper documents as evidence. The usual period is 28 days, but there are years of documents, videos and photographs, which will exceed the usual time limit to produce.

The prosecution claims that Bulger had a significant effect on this extension because of his 16 years as a fugitive; a lot of evidence amassed in that time span.
