A 32-year-old Somerville man was ordered held without bail yesterday, accused of cutting off three of his girlfriend’s fingers in a grisly act of domestic violence, prosecutors said.

Jose Gonzalez, 32, was arraigned yesterday and charged with mayhem. He was ordered held under the state’s so-called “dangerousness statute,” said Erika Gully-Santiago, a spokeswoman for Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley.

At yesterday’s hearing, prosecutors said Gonzalez and his girlfriend had been arguing in a car on Washington Street when a police officer approached the crying woman to ask if anything was wrong. She said everything was alright.

Fifteen minutes later, a surveillance camera caught Gonzalez dropping the 30-year-old woman off at Boston Medical Center. Police later found a foldout knife and one of the woman’s pinky fingers on Washington Street.
