Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak has resigned.

The announcement came suddenly in a statement at 11 a.m. Eastern Time.

The embattled president had left Cairo Friday after announcing Thursday night that he would not step down.

The announcement will send shockwaves worldwide after more than 18 days of peaceful protests by millions of Egyptians fed up with a lack of human rights, basic services, and quality of life in Egypt.

The protests were marked by State Security police brutally engaging the demonstrators but a military that promised not to turn on its own countrymen, which ultimately may have given both the people and the world the time needed to see change come to the region after decades in power for Mubarak.
