Nintendo has announced that its highly anticipated 3DS handheld will be released February 26 of next year in Japan and will retail for 2500 Yen. While no firm release date for North America has been announced, the device is expected to hit shelves here in March and cost you somewhere between $249 and $299.

The price is obviously a bit higher than previous DS system incarnations, but not as steep as some analysts have predicted.

Nintendo officially announced the 3DS at this year’s E3 in June. The device, pictured at right, is capable of producing full 3D images, without the use of glasses or other external technologies. It also features a slider that can change the game or movie image from 3D to 2D.
