Today mega international retailer Wal-Mart opened a new store, but not in the traditional brick and mortar sense.

The company unveiled its digital videogame outlet “GameCenter” today. It’s being called a “new online destination that combines special savings on the latest video games with first-look exclusives and previews.”

The GameCenter

Before you write off the destination as merely a shiny gimmick, know that the Center actually has some seriously bright spots.

For one, in the Game Center today is an exclusive video (no one’s seen this) of Harmonix designers as well as Tre, Billie Joe and Mike from Green Day speaking at length about Green Day: Rock Band in a behind the scenes look. Wade deeper into the site and you’ll find a Toy Story 3 exclusive look. Not too bad.

"Walmart Gamecenter combines incredible savings with exclusive gaming content all in a

compelling and interactive experience online," says Kelly Thompson, vice president of

merchandising for Walmart.com. "Gaming enthusiasts will be drawn in by the exclusive content

and developer interviews, while moms will appreciate the special savings only Walmart can offer

on the hottest video game titles."

Personally, I’m surprised it took Wal-Mart this long to do something like this.
