Google is spending a ton of money in Washington.

According to public records, Google spent $800,000 during Q1 2009 on lobbying and about $4 million during all of 2009. But for Q1 2010, Google has already spent about $1.4 million.

“They’re now one of the highest rollers in Washington,” said John M. Simpson, a consumer advocate with the non-profit Consumer Watchdog group.

“Despite what Google claimed, it’s not about consumers at all,” said Simpson. “Google is seeking laws that let the company do whatever it wants in its quest for record profits. If that means record sums on influence-peddling, so be it.”

Google did not return requests for comment.
