While you slept, Nintendo of Japan announced the next line in the DS franchise, tentatively named the “3DS.”

It’s a fully backwards compatible machine, meaning it’ll play both DS and DSi games, won’t require 3D glasses and is said to be shown heavily at this year’s mega trade show, E3, in June.

The Nintendo 3DS is said to release in Japan (and likely later in North America) by the end of the fiscal year.

Images or more concrete details aren’t anywhere right now. But E3 is scheduled for June 15, so the light may be dim, but it’s about to get a lot brighter.

When this sucker hits the market will be saturated with the original DS, the DS Lite, the DSi, the DSi XL and then the 3DS. Wow.
