There’s more to the TV-to-DVD world than old episodes of M*A*S*H and the dozen or so Law and Order spin-offs. From WGBH and the UK comes Prime Suspect 7: The Final Act. This British crime drama stars Academy Award-winner Helen Mirren (The Queen) as Detective Superintendent Jane Tennison. Tennison must fine Sallie Sturdy, a 14-year-old girl who everyone fears murdered. Along the way she battles alcoholism, family illness and a pressure to retire from the crime solving life. At 184 minutes, it’s the perfect British long-form mystery. Let’s face it, there’s a lot of the same old stuff on TV these days. Helen Mirren gives a performance that the San Francisco Chronicle called “perhaps the greatest role and performance of a female police detective, ever.”
